Star Wars: Battlefront has been out for a week for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, and Electronic Arts is already declaring it a success. EA Studios Executive Vice President Patrick Söderlund announced Tuesday that the shooter had the biggest Star Wars game launch in history. Of more interest to those who purchased the game, more free maps and other content is coming in addition to The Battle of Jakku.
“Star Wars Battlefront is the biggest launch of a Star Wars video game ever and is the largest digital launch in the history of EA,” Söderlund revealed.
The mention of the largest digital launch is an interesting note as GameStop just revealed Star Wars: Battlefront did not meet reduced sales expectations for the game retailer, as Inquisitr reported. The market didn’t react well, but Oppenheimer analysts (via Benzinga) remain positive on Electronic Arts and Battlefront due to consumers purchasing the game online and how close it is to Black Friday. Gamers could simply be holding their purchase for a relatively short two weeks in search of a better deal. There’s also the potential boost in sales it could receive from the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens on December 18.
Star Wars: Battlefront has been one of the more contentious titles to be launched this year. Fans of the original Battlefront titles frequently lamented the lack of certain features like space battles and a dedicated campaign leading up to launch. Meanwhile, reviews have been mixed with praise for the graphics and presentation, but negative marks for the amount of content.

Electronic Arts and DICE are ready to solve the content part with the release of The Battle of Jakku free DLC for Star Wars: Battlefront on December 1 for pre-orders and everyone else the following week. It features two maps set on the planet featured prominently in The Force Awakens, and DICE just introduced the new “Turning Point” mode today.
The Battle of Jakku is not going to be the only free DLC for Battlefront, however. Söderlund teased the future plans for the Star Wars shooter and it is not all limited to paid content.
“In two weeks, The Battle of Jakku launches. Taking place 29 years before the events of Star Wars™:The Force Awakens™, The Battle of Jakku is a free DLC pack* that adds two new maps (including one for popular modes like Walker Assault and Supremacy) and a new mode to the game. The coolest thing is that it’s the only place you’ll be able to experience the pivotal events that help shape the look of one of the next iconic planets in the Star Wars universe. We can’t wait for you to step onto Jakku for the first time with us.
“Of course, we are also planning to support Star Wars Battlefront with new content well into the future. We will be adding more of what you love about the game, like new maps and Star Cards, for free in the coming months, in addition to all of the content we have coming with Season Pass. We’ll have more to share soon.”
When that free DLC will arrive and how frequently it will become available is up for debate. DICE has given solid support to Battlefield 4 with the free “Night Operations” and “Community Operations” DLC packs for the shooter that includes maps and other content. That was after the run of expansions from the Season Pass ended, however, but Söderlund’s comments imply that free content will be released in between paid DLC.
Plans for the Star Wars: Battlefront Season Pass have already been laid out, as previously covered. The $50 pass includes:
- 4 expansion packs
- 16 additional multiplayer maps featuring new locations
- 4 new game modes
- 4 more heroes and villains
- Over 20 new pieces of “galactic tech,” including weapons, vehicles, and Star Cards
