Was Jennifer Lopez Slammed In The Mariah Carey ‘I Don’t Know Her’ GIF? Mimi’s Explanation Is Even Shadier Than The Original
Mariah Carey’s “I Don’t Know Her” diss toward Jennifer Lopez has found a place among the most legendary of the singer’s many takedowns of other pop divas. A GIF of Mariah’s cutting response after being asked what she thought of Jennifer has forever immortalized the moment on social media and forums across the Internet.
While Carey hasn’t made a reference to the fact that the “I Don’t Know Her” GIF was such a hit online, she may have just revealed in an interview that she’s aware of the Lopez dig’s popularity. In a recent interview, Mariah shared a story that is almost assuredly about the Jennifer slam and its subsequent rebirth as a GIF.
You can read the quote from her recent New York Magazine interview to decide if she’s talking about Jennifer Lopez for yourself, but the way Mariah Carey eases into the story with a disinterested yawn seems to indicate she’s once again feigning disinterest. Furthermore, Mariah’s answer came seemingly out of the blue when she was asked what one of her favorite gifts from a fan was.
“Recently? I don’t know. [yawns] I’m sorry, I’m having a ‘sleep’ moment…
“Well, there was a very interesting shirt that a fan made with a quote that I said years ago that, when I said it, I really wasn’t trying to be funny. I was just being honest and everybody’s kind of blowing it out of proportion but this guy had a shirt on and it was a picture of me that he made and the quote was underneath it — and I’m going to leave you hanging as to what it was.”
Asked about whether or not it would be easy to find the answer on Google, Carey said, “Probably, yes.” The proof is so evident that NY Mag even added an editor’s note confirming that they’d come to the same conclusion: the singer is aware of the Mariah shading Jennifer GIF craze.
In public, J.Lo says that she is aware of Mariah’s dismissals and that she hasn’t let it get to her. When speaking with Andy Cohen in 2014, Jennifer actually said that she would still like to be friends with Mariah.
Aside from the Lopez GIF debacle, Mariah has plenty of other major feuds on her hands. The 90s pop star has heavily criticized practically all of her major rivals — she’s even gone after Madonna.
Perhaps her most infamous recent spat was sparked by her appearance on American Idol opposite Nicki Minaj — Jennifer has also served as a judge on the show, albeit during other seasons. The pair clashed constantly on the talent search program, and even afterward continued to fire shots at one another.
