Gold KitKat Candy Bars Buzz: $16 For 24-Karat Gold Leaf Edible Bars — 500 To Be Sold

There’s buzz on Facebook about golden KitKat candy bars to be released by Nestlé. Appearing under the trending section on Facebook, news about the golden KitKat bars covered in edible 24-karat gold leaf has people buzzing.

Nestle calls it a gold KitKat bar that melts in your mouth, on Twitter.

Japan has been known to sell a variety of flavors of Kit Kat bars and other candy that isn’t often found in the U.S. For example, there’s the Japanese KitKat – Maccha Green Tea Bag 4.91 oz by Nestle on Amazon, which is described as containing 12 mini size KitKats in the bag.

Those green tea KitKat bars have a mild and sweet taste. However, the new gold KitKat bars will have a “sublime bitter” taste that still tastes like chocolate, reports the Guardian. Previously, Nestle announced, via a press release in 2014, that the world’s first KitKat boutique was opening in Japan, featuring special flavors of KitKat bars. Those flavors didn’t include a gold KitKat bar mentioned back then, but the press release wrote of three flavors of KitKat bars named Sublime Bitter, Special Sakura Green Tea, and Special Chilli.

Stewart Dryburgh, the Global Brand Manager for KitKat, spoke of just how popular KitKat bars have become in Japan.

“KitKat is close to being a cult product in Japan, and it is a very special market for us.”

As far as getting your hands and taste buds on a gold KitKat bar, it might not be an easy feat for folks in the U.S., or in Japan, for that matter. The gold KitKat bars go on sale in December, and will be sold for about $16 USD, and that’s about $16 for one gold finger of a KitKat. A mere 500 of the gold KitKat bars will be sold, and only in Japan. Therefore, unless a gold KitKat somehow ends up on eBay or in a Japan Crate pack of candy, it could be rare to be able to find one shipped all the way to the U.S.

Nestle Japan has been known to have created more than 200 flavors of KitKat bars, so to step out and create a gold KitKat bar isn’t a stretch. Having already created flavors like wasabi and strawberry KitKat bars, the candymaker’s wild creations can be seen all across social media.

The fact that Nestle has created gold KitKat bars that can be eaten is creating online buzz well ahead of their launch. Perhaps due to the popularity that the gold KitKat bars have brought to the internet prior to their release, Nestle might see fit to spread their sales beyond the initial 500 gold KitKat bars.

The “Sublime Gold” KitKat bars, which will be drenched in the pretty gold leaf, will only be sold in eight stores across Japan. From Sapporo to Tokyo to Fukuoka in the southern region of Japan, the gold KitKat bars should taste like rich and creamy chocolate, with a bitter twinge.

Melanie Kohli, a spokesperson for Nestle Japan, spoke of Japan’s unique market, that has brought wild flavors like Kobe pudding, sweet potato, and cheesecake to KitKat bars.

“In Japanese convenience stores consumers are used to having new varieties all the time. Like you have wasabi from Shizuoka and strawberries in Kyushu. Japan is the only place where you can have such a variety of KitKat flavors, something linked to that regional culture.”
