Julia Roberts Tells Ryan Murphy ‘I Curse You’ Over ‘American Horror Story’

Julia Roberts, much like her Scream Queens niece, Emma Roberts, has become close to Ryan Murphy over the years, so it seems Julia would be a shoe-in for an American Horror Story role. Ms. Roberts tells a different story, however. In fact, the Flatliners actress disappointed fans with news that it would be highly unlikely to find her appearing in either one of Murphy’s horror-related series.

Eat Pray Love (2010) gave Julia Roberts an opportunity to really get to know director Ryan Murphy, and the two have grown rather close through the intervening years. In fact, Roberts recently made a co-starring appearance in Ryan’s award-winning The Normal Heart and also was the one to present Murphy with his amfAR award in Los Angeles.

With so much history behind them, it seems odd that Julia has yet to appear on Ryan’s American Horror Story and, even more quizzical, many wonder why Murphy has yet to ask Roberts to appear on his horror anthology.

It’s not so surprising, after Julia Roberts confesses that she cannot even get through commercials for American Horror Story.

“I am the most fitful scaredy cat. When the first American Horror Story came out, remember the first poster? I said to him, ‘OK, I curse you. I stop at a traffic light and I have to look at that thing on billboards,” Ms. Roberts revealed to E! News. “It gives me the willies. What is that? What is going on? What have you done?'”

Julia added that she does try to support her niece, following Emma’s career with pride, but she doesn’t like that it means following Murphy’s most gruesome series.

While Julia may not be jumping for joy over American Horror Story, Ms. Roberts has been publicly applauding Hunger Games actress Jennifer Lawrence for her wage gap essay and for her willingness to put herself out there among Hollywood’s elite.

“She’s a young, fabulous, talented whippersnapper and I love that she’s stirring things up,” Roberts said, according to People magazine. “I mean, she just – she’s so energetic and seems to speak her mind, and I think it’s great.”

Julia says that Jennifer’s ability to shake things up among Hollywood executives is a rare and much needed talent, but Ms. Roberts also says she sees some of her own ferocity in Ms. Lawrence.

“I feel like part of my personality is ferocious, and part of my personality is the greatest power you can wield toward an enemy is to ignore their existence,” Julia says.

Ms. Roberts moved on in the interview to discuss her newest project, Secret in Their Eyes, the latest thriller from director Billy Ray (Captain Phillips, State of Play). Secret in Their Eyes teamed Ms. Roberts up with husband and cinematographer Danny Moder. Julia says that working with her spouse encouraged her to try to impress him as much as possible.

Secret in Their Eyes explores what happens when a tight-knit group of investigators are torn apart by the murder of the daughter of one of those investigators.

Roberts revealed that working long hours with her husband benefited their home life in unexpected ways. For example, Julia says that, by the time the work day was finished, the two of them were so weary of shop talk that their only topics of conversation revolved around getting home and the children.

Julia Roberts has three children, twins Hazel and Phinnaeus, 10, and Henry, 8, with Danny Moder.

Secret in Their Eyes, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Nicole Kidman, and Julia Roberts, hits theaters on November 20.
