‘Guardians Of The Galaxy 2’ Cast: Mystery Role Possibly Revealed

The Guardians of the Galaxy 2 cast is slowly being revealed. Many of the cast from the first entourage outing are returning, but there appears to be a new character confirmed to be joining them.

In 2014, we were introduced to Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), an orphan who called himself Star Lord. As he went about attempting to steal a mysterious orb which had more power than he was aware of, he crossed paths with Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Groot (Vin Diesel), and Rocket (Bradley Cooper). At first they were at each other’s throats, but the misfits eventually teamed up and became what Corpsman Dey (John C. Reilly) dubbed the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Much like the Avengers, the Guardians are bound to add new members to their ranks. The newest has been revealed to be played by French actress Pom Klementieff. While her role in the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 cast is still unconfirmed, sources have told Deadline that she will be playing the role of a key addition to the team.

Pom’s role has yet to be confirmed, but it is rumored to be Mantis, the half-German, half-Vietnamese martial artist raised and trained by pacifist alien renegades known as the Kree.

Much like the other Guardians, Mantis had difficulty living a noble life, partly due to being related to the Vietnamese crime lord Monsieur Khruul (her uncle, who had hunted her parents and led to her being raised in a temple). Ironically, she ended up working for him, and even tried to join the Avengers several times. They didn’t trust her based on previous deceit and the fact that she’d single-handedly taken down Thor and Captain America, according to the official Marvel Wiki.

Her strong ties to Thanos and the Avengers could easily play a role in the Guardians possibly working with the Avengers. Her Kree-trained powers of telepathy were also part of what helped the Avengers find Captain Marvel. Again, Pom’s role as Mantis has not been officially confirmed for the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 cast, and if it is, her backstory would most likely be changed to fit the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Another Guardians of the Galaxy 2 cast member is still unknown, but as previously reported by the Inquisitr, the main villain has Marvel aiming high. Hollywood A-lister Matthew McConaughey was offered the part, but he turned it down.

Cinema Blend has suggested a few villains that Marvel may have wanted the Interstellar star to play.

One of these villains is Thane, the literal son of Thanos. Being the step-brother to Gamora, he would definitely help the focus on “fathers” that James Gunn has claimed the movie will have.

Another possible villain is Peter Quill’s father, who James Gunn has stated will be different for the films. J’Son of Spartax could give way to Warlock, a character who battled his future self, known as Magus, in the comics. What may have been Warlock’s cocoon was seen in the Collector’s museum before the orb’s energy destroyed everything.

For now, there are little more than rumors circulating around who may be added to the Guardians by May 2017, but one thing will be making its originally teased appearance in the sequel, as previously reported by the Inquisitr.

Peter Quill’s Awesome Mix 2 will likely play just as much a role as the first one did in the original GOTG. James Gunn has stated that he hasn’t heard it, but it will be in his next film.

We might not get any official confirmation about anything concerning the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 cast until closer to the Doctor Strange release date around this time next year. Until then, we can always speculate.
