Before you choose a pattern and get started on your carving project, here’s a tip that will help your creation last longer: don’t gut your pumpkin before you carve it. While most people scoop out the contents of a pumpkin before they turn it into a Jack ‘o Lantern, the Alaska Dispatch News states that carved pumpkins with the “insides intact” last up to 10 days as long as they are stored in a cool place at night.
“When storing the pumpkin, spray it with water and wrap it inside a plastic bag to retain moisture. Right before Halloween, make a hole in the bottom, scoop out the guts and add a candle or battery-powered light to the inside — all of the details you carved will glow beautifully.”
TV Over Mind reports that carving pumpkins is a popular pre-Halloween activity for many people who want to make their pumpkin stand out on their doorstep. Here are several online resources for finding free and low-cost pumpkin carving stencils. Most just require a simple download and you can print the stencil on a standard printer using a sheet of 8.5 x 11-inch paper.
Stoneykins: Find a wide variety of pumpkin carving patterns including politicians, celebrities, vampires, cartoon characters, NFL and MLB teams, and basic patterns for haunted houses and ghosts. New this year are the Batman vs Superman stencils, James Bond 007, Grumpy Cat, and all of the Peanuts characters. These patterns are not free, but each pattern costs between $1 and $5 to download.
