Before you choose a pattern and get started on your carving project, here’s a tip that will help your creation last longer: don’t gut your pumpkin before you carve it. While most people scoop out the contents of a pumpkin before they turn it into a Jack ‘o Lantern, the Alaska Dispatch News states that carved pumpkins with the “insides intact” last up to 10 days as long as they are stored in a cool place at night.
“When storing the pumpkin, spray it with water and wrap it inside a plastic bag to retain moisture. Right before Halloween, make a hole in the bottom, scoop out the guts and add a candle or battery-powered light to the inside — all of the details you carved will glow beautifully.”
TV Over Mind reports that carving pumpkins is a popular pre-Halloween activity for many people who want to make their pumpkin stand out on their doorstep. Here are several online resources for finding free and low-cost pumpkin carving stencils. Most just require a simple download and you can print the stencil on a standard printer using a sheet of 8.5 x 11-inch paper.
Stoneykins: Find a wide variety of pumpkin carving patterns including politicians, celebrities, vampires, cartoon characters, NFL and MLB teams, and basic patterns for haunted houses and ghosts.
