It is not often that the cover of a song will surpass the original artist’s version, but this may actually be the case with Kygo and Ella Henderson. Taylor Swift has a bonafide hit again with her latest song, “Wildest Dreams.” However, Ella Henderson just appeared on Radio One’s Live Lounge, and her version of the song is nothing short of spectacular.
With Kygo on the piano, Henderson put her own spin on “Wildest Dreams” that could leave a lot of people thinking Taylor who? It’s as if this song begged for an acoustic version, and Kygo and Henderson more than delivered on their part. Henderson shows a vocal range that rivals most professional singers. Feel free to compare the two.
Live Lounge is a popular radio segment from BBC’s Radio 1 station and Radio 1Xtra. The segment usually takes an artist from one genre and has them perform songs from a different genre in an all-acoustic format. The host of Radio 1’s Live Lounge is Clara Amfo. Live Lounge was hosted originally by Jo Whiley and later by Fearne Cotton. Beginning in 2006, Live Lounge started releasing past performances on CD and digital download.
At just 19-years-old, Ella Henderson is establishing herself as one of Britain’s brightest up-and-coming young singers. She first came onto the scene in the ninth season of the British version of The X Factor in 2012. At the time, Henderson was expected to be a front runner in winning the competition. However, she was surprisingly voted off before the top five. That did not stop her from being signed.
Her first single, “Ghosts,” debuted on the British Singles Chart in June 2014, and it went to number one. It stayed in the top five for the better part of two months. Her first album, Chapter One, was later released in October 2014. As with “Ghosts,” it reached number one on the UK Album Charts.
Currently, Henderson is in the middle of her first headline tour that has stops all across the United Kingdom over the next two months. Henderson spoke to Express about her rise to the top and how it has surprised her.
It’s so surreal to think that on my 18th birthday a year ago, I was in the studio recording it and finishing it. A year later, I’m in America receiving a gold record for its sales worldwide. It’s crazy to think what can happen in such a short space of time.”
Kygo is a Norwegian DJ and record producer. He came onto the scene in 2014. His rise to fame can be attributed in large part to YouTube. He remixed Ed Sheeran’s single “I See Fire,” and it took off on YouTube and SoundCloud. It has currently been viewed over a combined 80 million times.
Kygo released his first single in December of 2014 titled “Firestone.” The reaction to “Firestone” has been nothing short of phenomenal. It is one of Spotify’s most popular titles, with numbers close to 275 million plays. This does not include the millions across YouTube.
This was not the first time that Kygo and Ella Henderson have gotten together to work on a project together. Ella Henderson is featured in Kygo’s latest single “Here You Go.” It was this release that brought the two together on Radio 1’s Live Lounge.
What do you think of the performance by Kygo and Ella Henderson? Taylor Swift is enjoying the success of “Wildest Dreams,” but do you think that her version is the best? How do you like the mashup that Radio 1 gives in Live Lounge? Are there other performances that you also enjoy from the BBC acoustic show?
