‘Jessica Jones’ Trailer From Marvel, Netflix Has Awesome Maya Rudolph Connection

A new Jessica Jones trailer has arrived from Marvel and Netflix, and while it may not offer much of a glimpse into the show itself, it does strike a tone of hilarity and fun that should make this series binge-worthy viewing.

And this may come as a surprise since she hasn’t been announced on the cast list, but there is a small but significant connection to funny lady Maya Rudolph.

More on that in a bit. First, a look at the trailer.

As you can see, Ms. Jones isn’t exactly the neatest and most orderly superhero-that-isn’t when viewers first meet her facedown on her pillow.

This looks like the ratted out apartment of a young, single twenty-something that’s been hit by the Mack truck of Life.

Immediately, it’s easy to connect with Jones as an old 1970s love song comes on the radio. Most 21st-century people are annoyed by the ’70s at this juncture, so when Minnie Riperton hits that high note in her song “Loving You,” Jessica does what many have wanted to do when that song comes on the radio.

Not to steal from another Marvel superhero here, but “Double J Smash!”

But before glossing over this whole song thing, this is where the Maya Rudolph connection gets interesting.

Now, many of you may already know this being the pop culture buffs that you are, but for those that aren’t, get ready to be shocked.

The song from the Jessica Jones trailer was crooned by the aforementioned Riperton, an extremely talented pure vocalist. Don’t believe that? Just check out this live performance.

How the woman was able to effortlessly hit those high notes, is a mystery to most of the world. Beyond that, however, she was also the mother of Maya Rudolph.

Rudolph hasn’t exactly tried to hide that fact either throughout her career. She paid homage to her mother in a 2012 interview with Fresh Air in which she had this to say about her.

“My mom was music. Music poured out of my mother, and I’m sure I heard it before I even got here when I was in her belly. Music sounds and feels very normal to me. My dad wrote all the songs with my mom…. They were on the road a lot. My brother and I would go with them, I think when we were very little, because my mom did not want to be away from us…. It was a different time for people being famous and being recognized for what they do. I always make this case because I feel like my mom was part of a generation of people who [had] incredible gifts. There was no sweetening of vocals. There was no Pro Tools then. So I feel like people like her really shone because they were just so incredibly gifted and one of a kind. She was very revered for that reason and very well-respected. My mom was a special, cool lady.”

If the Jessica Jones trailer and Maya’s sweet remembrances of her mother aren’t enough Minnie Riperton for you, check out this adorable side-by-side that Maya did on an episode of Saturday Night Live, captured by Jezebel in 2012.

Maya Rudolph also named her fourth child, Minnie Ida, after her mother in 2013, according to TMZ.

Pretty cool in a six degrees of Kevin Bacon sort of way, huh?

As for this Jessica Jones trailer, it isn’t the first, but it is the first where viewers actually get to see their “hero” in action.

Netflix had previously released this sneak peak earlier in the month.

These Jessica Jones trailer releases not enough for you? The whole series arrives November 20 on the streaming giant.
