There hasn’t been a Mega Millions jackpot winner since September 11 when one lucky ticket holder in New York won $106 million. According to the Lohud Journal, the winning ticket was sold at Patel’s Grocery and Convenience Store in Yonkers, New York. The store’s owner, Sammy Patel, states that the winner, who has yet to come forward, let the computer pick the numbers (5-11-31-50-67) using the Quick Pick option.
New York Lottery players have had quite a bit of luck with the Mega Millions game this year. According to the New York Post, $58 million was split between 16 co-workers at a New York pharmaceutical company on March 24, just one month after South Fallsburg resident Tammy Pratt won $126 million in the February 27 Mega Millions drawing. The new year started out right for Harold Diamond of Wurtsboro who won a $326 million jackpot in January.
Tuesday night’s jackpot is small compared to the current Powerball jackpot ($235 million), but it’s still enough to make life a little easier. If you are lucky enough to win, follow the advice of a financial adviser and the $25 million prize will go a long way.
According to USA Mega, a potential $25 million jackpot winner would not take home the full jackpot amount if they choose the lump-sum option. The payout is based on the cash value of the jackpot ($15 million), so the winner can expect to get approximately $11,475,000 after federal taxes. Many states tax lottery winnings — that amount will also be deducted from the prize before a check is issued to the winner.
There is also an option to spread the payments out over 30 years if the winner selects the annuity option. The winner would receive 30 average annual payments of $833,333 each before federal and state taxes.
Mega Millions tickets cost $1 each and are sold at lottery retailers in 44 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are held every Wednesday and Friday night — ticket sales close approximately 15 minutes prior to the drawing.
