MLB Playoff Standings: Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees Keep Winning

MLB playoff standings continue to look good for the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees. In the updated standings from Sunday evening (September 6), both teams are getting very close to clinching spots in the postseason. The Blue Jays beat up on the Baltimore Orioles, winning the game 10-4 to also win the weekend series.

The Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 6-4 on Sunday, keeping pace with the first place Blue Jays. In an updated look at the American League East, the 78-58 Blue Jays are 1-and-a-half games ahead of the 76-59 Yankees. The Yankees, despite being in second place, have a very strong hold on the AL wild card standings.

After the Yankees are the 71-64 Texas Rangers, with five games separating the two wild card hopefuls. A bit further down are the 70-66 Minnesota Twins at 1-and-a-half games back, the 69-67 Los Angeles Angels at 2-and-a-half games back, and the 67-69 Rays at 4-and-a-half games back. The Twins and Angels have each lost two games on the Yankees and Rangers over the past week.

The National League wild card race is not even close, as the 80-54 Pittsburgh Pirates and 78-57 Chicago Cubs have pulled way ahead. The closest two teams are the 71-65 Washington Nationals (7-and-a-half games back) and the 71-66 San Francisco Giants (8 games back). Time is running out on any team trying to break into the top five in the NL.

The division leaders are the 87-48 St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Central, the 78-58 LA Dodgers in the NL West, and the New York Mets in the NL East. In the American League the 82-54 Kansas City Royals lead the Central, the Blue Jays lead the East, and the 75-62 Houston Astros lead the West. The Cardinals are creeping up on clinching the best overall record in the NL, while the Royals still maintain a four-game lead on the rest of the AL playoff teams.

For the 2015 MLB playoff standings to shift at all, one of the hopefuls is going to have to get really hot in the final four weeks of the regular season. It should surprise no baseball fans if the top 10 teams at the moment become the 10 teams playing in the postseason. In regard to the potential match-ups, the wild card game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs looks very exciting on paper. Seeing the LA Dodgers and New York Mets as one of the match-ups could also be really intriguing for MLB fans.
