‘The Walking Dead’ Season 6 Will Start With A Time Jump And Then Work Its Way Back

Season 6 of AMC’s hugely popular zombie series, The Walking Dead, is about to get a who lot weirder thanks to some creative time-jumping that will leave the audience having to piece together the puzzle. Greg Nicotero reveals all the crazy details as he talks about Episode 1 of season 6.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers about AMC’s The Walking Dead, as well as the comic book series it is based on. If you have not watched all available episodes of this show, please proceed with caution.

Recently, Greg Nicotero confided to Entertainment Weekly that season 6 of The Walking Dead would jump ahead — time-wise — at the very start of Episode 1. According to what he told EW, “the premiere will pick up later in the middle of a big action sequence and then work backwards to catch us up on how we ended up there.”

Now, we already knew that there would be some time-hopping and flashbacks in season 6, since Scott M. Gimple revealed this during the Walking Dead panel at San Diego Comic Con earlier this year. However, the news that the time jumping will happen from the very start of Episode 1 was not really expected. As Nicotero had told Entertainment Weekly last month, viewers will have to piece together the puzzle of what is going on. And this puzzle is likely to contain a splintered group as Andrew Lincoln pointed out recently, Episode 1 will follow 18 different storylines.

For fans of the comic book series that The Walking Dead is based on, this time jump will probably make a lot of sense. In the comic books, Alexandria eventually gets attacked by a super herd of walkers. Considering there have already been reports by sites such as i09 that there will be a record number of walkers in Episode 1 of The Walking Dead’s season 6, it seems likely the TV series will be following this comic book story line. However, because Greg Nicotero has indicated there will be a time jump, it looks like we will see this mega-herd of walkers attack and then the remainder of at least the first half of season 6 will deal with the events leading up to this attack.

It will be an interesting way to play out the season if this is the case. It will throw the audience in at the deep end and then they will have to work out just what is going on. Needless to say, regardless of whether this is the case or not, season 6 of The Walking Dead will start with a bang.

The Walking Dead returns to AMC for season 6 on October 11, 2015.
