The Season 1 finale of the widely acclaimed hacker drama Mr. Robot airs Wednesday night, September 2, on the USA Network cable channel, but fans can catch the explosive episode streaming online, either live as it airs or the next day — depending on what cable services, if any, you have available.
The finale of the first season of Mr. Robot was scheduled to air on August 26, but USA pulled the episode from its schedule after the horrific on-air murders of a TV news reporter and cameraman in Roanoke, Virginia, early that same morning.
A press release from USA Network last week revealed that the 10th and final episode of Mr. Robot Season 1 contained a scene with chilling similarities to the televised Roanoke slayings.
“Out of respect to the victims, their families and colleagues, and our viewers, we are postponing tonight’s episode. Our thoughts go out to all those affected during this difficult time,” the network’s release stated.
But seven days later, the Comcast-owned basic cable channel is ready to put the Mr. Robot season finale on the air, and online.
Fans who prefer to watch Mr. Robot online, or on demand, will not be alone. The ninth episode of the stylized and eerie thriller about a mentally unbalanced computer hacker who plots to undermine one of the world’s largest — fictional — corporations with a massive cyber-attack, showed twice as many viewers watching the show on a delayed basis than in its regular Wednesday night time slot.
For viewers who haven’t yet caught an episode of Mr. Robot, the show stars Rami Malek as Elliot Alderson, a computer security genius who is as socially maladjusted as he is skilled at breaking into even the most heavily protected internet systems.
Elliot meets a mysterious, older hacker, played by Christian Slater, who goes only by the alias “Mr. Robot.” The older man brings Elliot into an underground band of politically motivated cyber-criminals who plan to stage a massive hack against a giant corporation known as “EvilCorp.”
The show has received a wildly enthusiastic response from critics and from its weekly audience. On the Rotten Tomatoes review site, critics give the first season of Mr. Robot an astonishing 98 percent positive rating. Regular viewers give the show a 94 percent “liked it” rating.
Subscribers to the Comcast Xfinity cable service can use their login credentials to watch a live stream of the Mr. Robot Season 1 finale Wednesday night at 10 p.m. at this link. Viewers with a Time Warner Cable login can use this link to see the real time Mr. Robot stream.
But subscribers to other cable outlets will have to wait until Thursday, September 3, to stream the Mr. Robot finale online, via the USA Network site at this link. The USA Network site also has the first nine episodes available for online streaming as well, for viewers who need to catch up. Download the USA Now app to watch on mobile devices.
