Tragedy struck Arizona on Sunday morning when Mireya Alejandra Lopez, 22, drowned her twin two-year-old sons in a bathtub in the suburb of Avondale, Phoenix, according to reports emerging in the media. Mireya, who has confessed her crime, has been taken into police custody.
The mother also tried drowning her third child, but fortunately, the child’s grandmother came to the infant’s rescue. The youngest of the three brothers remains safe with Mireya’s family at the moment, reports Fox News.
Rescuers rushed to the scene of the tragedy after a call about twin infants drowning in a bathtub came at 11:54 a.m. on Sunday, police said. The twin children were found unresponsive when the medical team reached Mireya’s home, and though the authorities carried the children immediately to the hospital, the doctors declared the twins dead on arrival.
According to the Examiner, when the children’s grandmother arrived at Lopez’s residence in Arizona, she found the twins lying naked in bed. She thought they were sleeping until she found to her utter horror that the infants were not breathing. The older woman screamed for help and began giving CPR to the twins, when amidst the horror, she heard scuffled voices emanating from the bathroom. Rushing in, she found Lopez trying to drown another of her children in the bathtub. After a brief scuffle in which the grandmother “had to physically grab (the third boy) away from Ms. Lopez and pick him up to safety,” the older woman managed to call 911 and inform the authorities about the tragedy.
Now the Arizona mom faces two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. A court commissioner at Maricopa County Superior Court set her bail at $2 million, according to Yahoo News.
The Arizona mom, who has a history of mental illness and was taking medication for depression at the time of the incident, shared the custody of the children with their father. The children’s father remains unavailable for comment.
Prior to Lopez’s court hearing, an early police statement revealed that the mother held her twins face down by the backs of their heads as she forced them beneath the bathtub water. The Arizona mom also confessed to stabbing one of her children in the neck to confirm that he was dead.
Lopez allegedly confessed to killing the children because “nobody loved them and nobody loved her.”
The Avondale suburb where the tragedy occurred is located in a quiet section of Phoenix, Arizona, with a population of about 78,000 people.
