‘Doctor Who’ Series 9 Prequel Photo Hints At War Doctor Connection

Whovians rejoice because we’re less than a month away from the premiere of Doctor Who Series 9, and amid rumors that Peter Capaldi’s run as the Doctor could end sooner than expected and speculation that the next regeneration could be a woman, BBC America has released pictures that hint that the Twelfth Doctor’s upcoming adventures in time and space will tie-in with those of the Eighth Doctor.

DoctorWhoWatch reports that the two new photos come from the Series 9 prequel minisode “The Doctor’s Meditation,” which will screen in U.S. theaters September 15-16 along with the new 3D-converted version of the Series 8 finale, “Dark Water” and “Death in Heaven.” The screenings will feature appearances from Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman, with a panel hosted by Wil Wheaton, Digitial Spy reports. The BBC is yet to announce if “The Doctor’s Meditation” will be screened to fans outside of the U.S., or if it will be released online.

In the second photo above, Capaldi is seen grasping a large chalice. Whovians (Doctor Who fans) have pointed out that the chalice looks similar to the one Paul McGann’s Eighth Doctor drank from before regenerating in the 50th anniversary prequel minisode “The Night of the Doctor.” Longtime fans know nothing is ever a coincidence in Who-land, so many are concluding that this is the chalice that transformed McGann into John Hurt’s War Doctor.

Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has teased what fans can expect this upcoming season, including a search for the Doctor, who goes missing during the first two episodes, and Episodes 3 and 4 feature an underwater base full of ghosts, in which Moffat said, “I’ve always wanted to do ghosts in Doctor Who. Ghosts plus time travel always strikes me as a very strange idea.”

Capaldi recently revealed to GamesRadar the monster from Doctor Who’s past he’d love to face.

“Often if I’m asked that question I pick the most obscure one, like the Chumblies [from William Hartnell tale ‘Galaxy 4’],” he reveals. “I would like the Daemons, because they’re a little bit black magicky, a little bit supernatural. I like monsters that are not just sci-fi but who have got a horror movie kind of element to them.”

Peter and Moffat recently discussed casting and working with guest star Maisie Williams, check out their chat in the video below.

The new season of Doctor Who premieres Saturday, September 19th at 9/8c on BBC America.
