Explosions, Fire Reported From U.S. Military Facility In Kanagawa, Japan [Video]

A series of explosions and a fire has been reported from a U.S. military facility in Kanagawa in Tokyo. According to Russia Today, the explosions were reported in the early hours of the morning from the facility. Initial reports suggest that the incident happened at the Sagami General Depot, a U.S. Army outpost located in the Kanagawa Prefecture located on the outskirts of Tokyo.

According to local broadcaster NHK News, the first report of the explosions and the subsequent fire were reported just before 1 a.m. local time. Emergency personnel from the Sagamihara Fire Department, the nearest city, reached the site of the explosions soon after. At this time, there have been no reports of any casualties or injuries.

The Pentagon has in a statement confirmed that there has been a fire in the Kanagawa facility and that local emergency services have been pressed into service.

U.S. Navy commander and Pentagon Spokesperson Bill Urban added, “An explosion occurred today just after midnight Japan time at a building on a US Army post, the Sagami Depot in the city of Sagamihara, Japan, about 25 miles southwest of Tokyo. There are no reports of injury, and base firefighters and first responders are currently fighting the resulting fire to prevent its spread to nearby buildings. These are all the details we have at this time and will provide further information as we receive it.”

Meanwhile, several videos and photos of the explosions at Kanagawa were posted on social media websites soon after the incident happened.

An eyewitness told NHK News, “I was asleep, and at first I thought it might have been the roar of thunder. But then there was a sequence of explosions for 10, maybe 15 minutes. A pillar of orange rose to the skies, and the air was filled with the smell of gunpowder.”

Local news channels reported that as many as 10 firetrucks were dispatched to the site of the fire. There is, however, no evacuation order in place.

The news of this explosion in the U.S. Military facility in Kanagawa, Japan, comes just a few days after a massive explosion claimed several lives in the Chinese city of Tianjin.
