Megan Everett: Mom Who Kidnapped Daughter To Avoid Vaccinations, Black People, Faces Judge

Megan Everett, a 23-year-old Florida mom who kidnapped her then-2-year-old daughter to stop her from receiving vaccinations was captured on Monday, and on the next day, Everett appeared in front of a judge for the first time since she vanished with little Lily Baumann on May 6 of last year, leaving a note saying that she did not want the little girl to be “brainwashed.”

The missing toddler was recovered unharmed and returned to her father, Robert Baumann, who had been involved in a custody battle with Everett, driven largely by the right-wing extremist views and violent personality of Everett’s new lover, Carlos Lesters.

Baumann became alarmed when he saw a photo of his baby daughter surrounded by a stockpile of ammunition.

According to court documents, Lesters was a gun enthusiast who displayed the Confederate flag and espoused extreme, racist views. Baumann said that Lesters had Everett under his influence and had converted her to the cause of far-right extremism, even taking Lily to political demonstrations.

In addition to instilling Everett with a fear of vaccinations, Baumann said that under Lesters’ sway, Everett insisted on home-schooling Lily so that she would not be exposed to black people and African-American history.

Though the two parents were not married, a court had granted 50-50 custody of Lily to Everett and Baumann.

In Tuesday’s court appearance in Palakta, Florida — at which Everett appeared from jail via video conference — a judge informed the mom that she would be transported to Broward County in South Florida, where she had been living with Lesters and her daughter, to face kidnapping charges there.

When Everett disappeared last year with Lily, she also apparently skipped out on Lesters, leaving him a note.

“Dear C, if I let them take her and vaccinate her and brainwash her, I wouldn’t be doing what’s right,” said the note. “I cannot let a judge tell me how my daughter should be raised. We will miss you, but I had to leave. I know she will be safer and happier with my family and I. Love, Meg and Lilly.”

But investigators said that they believe Everett did not act alone when she abducted Lily — who had forgotten her real name when she and her fugitive mother were found living in a recreational vehicle just a day after their story aired on the CNN program The Hunt.

“There’s a very high likelihood that she had assistance, both financially and logistically, to get out of this area,” said Sunrise, Florida, Police Detective Louis Fernandez.

Robert Baumann, who was understandably excited to receive his daughter back, said that he had no desire to communicate with Megan Everett — but he did offer thanks to the anonymous tipster who called CNN after recognizing the mom and daughter on The Hunt, saying “you don’t know how much it means to me and my family.”
