‘Street Fighter V’ Adds Vega To The Roster, Fans Of Frilly Shirts Ecstatic

If you were worried that Street Fighter V wasn’t going to be flamboyant and acrobatic enough, worry not, for Vega is flipping his way into the melee. On August 3, Capcom announced that the tumbling matador has been officially added as the ninth fighter to the company’s flagship fighting franchise, according to IGN. This is not the biggest of reveals, since the flippy flamenco dancer has been a mainstay of the series since he was an unplayable boss in Street Fighter II, and he has rarely missed an appearance in the series since. For those expecting more of the more of the same, however, this is not your dad’s Vega.

The most obvious change is an aesthetic one. Capcom has tweaked Vega’s costume for Street Fighter V. Vega has always dressed like a matador, with tight pants, a red sash, and the black zapatos. For Street Fighter V, Capcom has added a frilly, white shirt to complete the matador look. Of course, since vanity is the fighter’s signature trait, that shirt does not even have buttons until you hit his navel, so you can see all the rippling muscles underneath. More important than his musculature, you can see the purple snake tattoo peeking over his shoulder. This, in addition to Vega’s mask and his claws, is a staple of his look throughout his Street Fighter career.

In addition to an updated look, Vega will be sporting new moves in Street Fighter V. Gamespot reports that the Sevillian ninja will have two different move sets because he will have two different fighting modes. One fighting mode, where he will be utilizing his famous claw, and another where he will fight clawless. The clawless mode will include a command grab, similar to Zangeif or Alex, who are both wrestling characters from previous Street Fighter games. Generally, these characters have a more advanced move set and can be more difficult to use than most other characters. Vega’s claw will still be able to be knocked off, but he will no longer be able to pick it up, so if his claw is knocked off, he will be stuck in clawless mode.

Street Fighter V was leaked December 5, 2014, and officially announced the next day. Since then, nine fighters, including Vega, have been periodically announced for the roster. Of course, series staples Ryu, Ken, and Chun-Li are on the roster. Making a return appearance in Street Fighter V are Cammy, M. Bison, and Nash, who is basically a zombie version of Street Fighter Alpha’s Charlie and Birdie who appeared in the original Street Fighter, but has made very few entries into the series since. So far, there has only been one brand new character announced for Street Fighter V, an animalistic Brawler by the name of Necalli, who has crazy hair and is covered in tattoos.
