A plane crash close to London killed four people, including two relatives of Osama bin Laden. The Saudi government is helping the family through its loss and working with British authorities to investigate the crash.
According to NBC News, the private jet, a Phenom 300 worth roughly $11 million, crashed at Blackbushe Airport in Hampshire, which is roughly 40 miles southwest of London. Four people were killed, including bin Laden’s stepmother Rajaa Hashim and half-sister Sana bin Laden along with her husband Zuhair Hashim. The Jordanian pilot also died.
The crash occurred in a parking lot at the end of the runway, where the pilot was attempting to land at 3:09 p.m. local time.
The Saudi embassy released a statement shortly afterwards.
“His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Nawaf Al Saud… has paid his condolences to the family and relatives of Mohammed bin Laden at Blackbushe airport in Britain for the great loss they have suffered as a result of the crash of the plane that was carrying the family.”
Mohammed bin Laden, Osama’s father, built a construction empire in Saudi Arabia, providing a life of wealth for his enormous family. He reportedly had around 50 children with many different wives.
The family largely cut ties with the Osama bin Laden before ultimately disowning him for the 9/11 terror attacks.
The bin Ladens’ history with aviation has been one disaster after another. The family patriarch Mohammed died in a crash in 1967. According to the Express, the jet’s tail number, HB-IBN, originally belonged to the father’s ill-fated plane.
In 1988, Mohammed’s oldest son Salem also died in a crash in Texas according to BBC News.
Now, two more members of the family are gone, but the crash in Hampshire is still a mystery.
The company British Car Auctions used the parking lot for their inventory. Andrew Thomas claims he saw the aftermath of the incident while shopping for a new vehicle.
“I saw it when it had just happened, and could see the plane and cars in flames. The plane nose-dived into the cars and exploded on impact.”
No one on the ground was injured; a few spectators were close enough to take video.
The Phenom 300 was arriving from Milan, Italy. Why the pilot appeared to dive into the parking lot is still unclear.
The Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation said that they would work closely with the U.K. Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) and ensure a timely recovery of the bodies. The family’s disowned son, Osama bin Laden, died in a fight with Navy Seals in 2011.
