MLB Trade Rumors: Chicago Cubs Acquire Dan Haren From Miami Marlins

The Chicago Cubs have acquired starting pitcher Dan Haren from the Miami Marlins, according to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times.

While the Cubs have been rumored to be interested in several big name pitchers, including studs such as the recently traded David Price and Cole Hamels, they will begin their improvements with the seasoned veteran Haren. At 34-years-old, Haren has bounced around the league a lot throughout his 13-year career, having tours of duty with seven different teams.

In 2015, Haren is having a decent year, pitching to a 7-7 record with a 3.42 ERA in 21 starts for the disappointing Marlins team. While he is far from the former three-time All-Star form of years past, he has been one of the most reliable starters in all of the baseball over the last decade.

He was acquired in a big trade in the offseason, traded from the Dodgers alongside Dee Gordon, and Miguel Rojas in exchange for Austin Barnes, Chris Hatcher, Andrew Heaney, and Enrique Hernandez. However, there were rampant rumors that Haren would be retire if he was traded out east to Miami. Haren, who lives on the west coast, wanted to be closer to his family.

However, Haren decided to report to Spring Training with the Marlins and honor his contract. He is likely happy that he did as thanks to his productive first half, he will now be thrown right into a potential playoff atmosphere for the contending Cubbies.

With Haren gone, he becomes the latest Marlin to be moved at this year’s non-waiver trade deadline. Former closer Steve Cishek was traded to the Cardinals, starter Mat Latos was sent to the Dodgers in a huge three-team, 12 player trade. Several other players, including position players Jeff Baker, Martin Prado, Derek Dietrich. Several pitchers figure to be available too, including Carter Capps, who is rumored to have the interest of the New York Yankees.

It is unclear what the return to Miami will be but the outline of their return is known. Joe Frisaro of MLB is reporting that the Marlins will get two minor league players in return. Although it’s not known who they are, it will reportedly be one position player and one pitcher.
