Elderly California Woman Runs Over Husband, Crashes Through House

An elderly California woman ran over her husband on Wednesday, leading to his death shortly after. It was called an accident, though authorities are investigating.

The Martinez, California couple had been attempting to re-position their Toyota Corolla in their garage, with him in front attempting to guide her in. In a reported blunder, the woman had hit the accelerator instead of the brake, causing her to roll over him, and then through the back wall of the garage. The car had come to a stop right in front of a pile of pipes and scrap metal in the back yard.

Her husband had been pinned under the car in the process. Emergency responders were able to bring him to the John Muir Medical Center, still conscious. Eventually, the man succumbed to his injuries and passed away.

Before dying, the elderly man was able to give a statement about what had happened.

The home where this happened was just under an hour’s drive northeast of San Francisco, in an unincorporated area of Martinez.

According to Yahoo News, the couple have not been properly identified, but local news said the California woman who ran over her husband was 84-year-old Yvonne Cottrell. The man killed in the accident was said to be 89-year-old Glen Cottrell.

California Highway Patrol Officer John Fransen said authorities have determined that drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the incident. He had been unable to provide exact ages or identities for the couple, but he offers his condolences to friends and family.

“We’re looking at it as an unfortunate set of circumstances, and our heart goes out to her and her family. But we’ll see where the investigation leads.”

No foul play has been suspected from the California woman who ran over her husband and crashed through the couple’s home. Unless the investigation turns up something unusual, it is officially an unfortunate accident.
