Kentucky Derby Entries Announced: Alpha, Bodemeister Lead A 21 Horse Field


The entry box for the Kentucky Derby closed Wednesday morning with 21 horses entered for the 20 spots allotted for Saturday’s race.

Fox Sports reports that the post positions will be determined later this afternoon.

Trainer Bob Baffert has two horses entered in the derby. Bodemeister, the dominant winner of the Arkansas Derby, is a likely favorite this weekend. Bodemeister is currently listed with 9-2 odds. Baffert will also be running Liaison in the Kentucky Derby, who will be a longshot at 40-1.

Todd Pletcher will also be racing two horses with Gemologist and El Padrino. Both of Pletcher’s houses have a shot at taking home the trophy with 7-1 and 16-1 odds respectively.

If you’re picking your horse by its trainer, you can’t go wrong with Optimizer. The horse was trained by D. Wayne Lukas who will be entering his 45th horse in the Derby. Lukas how won the race four times.

2006 Derby winner Michael Matz will also be returning for another shot of glory. Matz will be running Union Rags who is currently a favorite with 9-2 odds.

The 138th Kentucky Derby entries list is comprised of horses who have won the UAE Derby, the Sunland Derby, the Illinois Derby, and the Santa Anita Derby.
