Princeton University To Suspend Freshmen Who Rush Frats

Princeton freshman hoping to engage in wild parties during their first few weeks of college are out of luck. University officials this week announced that any freshman caught joining, rushing or pledging to a Greek organization will face immediate suspension starting in the fall.

The heads of the university have grown increasingly worried that the social exclusiveness of fraternities are ultimately hurting the student body.

Princeton has a long-standing policy in which the university refuses to acknowledge frats or sororities as part of the university eco-system and they have now taken that policy one step further, promising to also suspend any Greek system participant if they attempt to solicit freshmen pledges.

While the Greek lifestyle may not be acknowledged by Princeton and while there are no fraternity or sorority houses located on the universities campus nearly 15% of the study body belongs to one of the 12 frats and four sororities on campus. Sororities and fraternities also still serve the school community through various practices.

In the meantime Princeton officials hope that by banning freshmen from greek activities they will cut down on the amount of alcohol consumed by students while limiting teir access to Greek organizations.

In the meantime Princeton isn’t the only Ivy League school to implement such a policy, Yale enacted the same rules for its incoming freshmen in March.

Do you think limiting access to fraternities and sororities for one full year will keep many students from joining such groups or simply delay an inevitable march towards social exclusiveness for most of those same students?
