Can ‘Gotham’ Season 2 Survive Without Fish Mooney?

When rumors started circulating that Jada Pinkett-Smith would not be returning to Gotham after the season one finale, many Gothamites were in shock and denial.

How could Gotham’s resident bad girl and notorious nightclub owner not remain a fixture on Fox’s runaway hit? After surviving kidnap and shenanigans at the hand of Francis Dulmacher, removing her own eye as a means of saving it, and surviving a gunshot wound following an island escape to finally face off with bad boys of Gotham for the keys to the city, fans witnessed the self-proclaimed “King of Gotham” push his former mentor to her death.

Since we didn’t actually see Fish Mooney being dragged off by a hungry shark, fans can keep hoping that she will reappear in Gotham when least expected, in true Fish Mooney style. Perhaps Fish Mooney died the same way Penguin “died” in the beginning of the first season.

Either way, Gotham season two promises a deliciously sinister storyline after the long hot summer.

Fish Mooney’s death left a gaping hole in the hearts of fans and big bad shoes to fill in Gotham, shoes so big that it took an army of villains to fill them. Enter Ogre, Victor Zsasz and Tabitha Galavan aka Tigress who TV Line warns us is “the lead enforcer for her brother Theo, a billionaire industrialist hell-bent on taking over Gotham.” According to Variety, Theo alerts us that Gotham’s season two will fulfill its promises after all.

Monsters are coming, cleanse this city in blood and fire.”

Enter next, The Joker, a villain who really needs no introduction.

With all this terror ready to rain down on the unsuspecting citizens of Gotham, GCPD will need reinforcements.

Enter Captain Nathaniel Barnes, the “law and order zealot,” according to Entertainment Weekly. Captain Barnes, played by TV Veteran Michael Chiklis, is slated to be in Gordon’s corner, but his rigid view of the law can put him on the outside of Gordon’s good graces as season two progresses.

But there’s more than crime in Gotham. Love is taking center stage with the entrance of Silver St. Cloud, the “Gotham debutante” young Bruce gets googley-eyes for. She’s also Tigress’ niece, which should make for a very interesting affair and a potential teenage triangle between Bruce, Silver and Selina.

While Fish Mooney may not be returning for Gotham’s season two, fans can still see a little bit of her in former student. Penguin, who learned everything he knows about infamy and disreputable behavior from Fish, will be back for more mayhem.

Also returning from Gotham’s debut lineup are the usual suspects, E. Nygma, Selina Kyle, and resident good guys Alfred, Gordon, Bullock and of course Batman himself, Bruce Wayne.

With four Emmy nominations under its belt, Gotham will return with season two on September 21 on Fox and everything will be just fine.
