El Chapo Guzmán Escape: A Trip Through The 4,900 Foot Tunnel Complete With Lights [Video]

The El Chapo Guzmán escape has garnered the media attention of the entire world after the drug cartel leader’s elaborate, Hollywood-esque escape. The drug kingpin Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera, simply known as “El Chapo, escaped the El Altiplano prison in a Shawshank Redemption manner, complete with a 4,921-foot long tunnel which included lighting and ventilation systems. To add to the drama, Guzmán road through the tunnel on a motorcycle.

A video uploaded by Gawker shows the moment that El Chapo Guzmán escaped along with video footage taken within the elaborate tunnel.

“Witness the moment of the escape and the amazing tunnel (4,921 feet long, with a ventilation system, electric illumination, and motorized carts) that El Chapo Guzmán took to get out of the prison of El Altiplano, in Mexico.”

The video gives viewers a glimpse inside the tunnel that allowed the notorious drug leader access to the outside world. The tunnel featured a ventilation system, lighting, and motorized carts throughout. Though the escape was elaborate and unexpected, some are questioning why Mexico insisted on keeping the drug lord instead of extraditing him to the United States where he would have had a more difficult time escaping.

CNN spoke with the ex-head of the DEA’s El Paso Intelligence Center Phil Jordan who predicted the escape back in February 2014 when the arrest was made. Jordan had noted that unless El Chapo was extradited to the United States in a timely fashion, he would escape within a period of time.

“It is a significant arrest, provided he gets extradited immediately to the United States. If he does not get extradited, then he will be allowed to escape within a period of time…. If he is, in fact, incarcerated, until he gets extradited to the United States, it will be business as usual.”
