An 8-month-old German Shepherd puppy was found abandoned on the side of a Denver road this week. The worst part was not that German Shepherd was abandoned, but in addition to being left to fend for itself on a busy Colorado street, the puppy’s muzzle and legs were taped together with duct tape.
Thankfully, Good Samaritan Carl Allen and his friend happened to be driving by and spotted the young shepherd, although because it wasn’t moving, Allen said he wasn’t really sure what he was seeing at first.
“I didn’t know if it was real because the dog wasn’t moving. The dog was standing still and we just saw the white tape on the mouth and I said ‘is that a dog with its mouth taped shut?’ From the moment I got out of the car and seen what I was looking at was real, my heart was beating, I almost shed a tear”
Two other people who were passing by at the same time also stopped their cars and jumped out to help the shepherd pup. Carl said the dog was so scared that he initially tried to run away despite the fact that its front paws were also duct-taped together.
“It was terrified, very terrified. It’s tail was tucked and it started urinating on itself. We just kept trying to pet it and tell it that everything was ok, that we’re just trying to help you. Once we started petting it, it started calming down a little bit. I could only imagine what it was going through.”
Eventually, Allen and the others removed the Duct-tape from the abandoned puppy, and Denver Animal Control took over caring for the young German Shepherd — which turned out to be a female. She is doing well and is in good health, says Animal Protection Officer Sgt. Stephen Romero. She will have to stay with Animal Control for a few more days while further tests are run, but ultimately, Romero says the goal is to get her into a new, loving home as soon as possible.
As for Carl Allen, the Good Samaritan who helped rescue the abandoned German Shepherd puppy? He says he’s grown up with dogs all his life, and doesn’t understand how anyone could do this to a defenseless animal. He also has a message for the person who did this to the young puppy.
“I hope karma comes back around and gets them good, they need to go to jail for something like that.”
