Sophie Hawkins Baby Girl Born At 50: Singer Sophie B. Credits Fate For Thawing Embryos To Allow 2nd Baby [Video]

Sophie B. Hawkins welcomed a baby girl. The 50-year-old singer named her second child, Esther Ballantine Hawkins, reported Us Weekly.

Born July 7, Esther has a big brother named Dashiell, born in 2008.

“Dashiell and I are ecstatic to finally be with our beautiful girl,” declared Sophie. “Our family is now complete!”

Hawkins made headlines when she first announced that she was pregnant at 50. Her baby bump was nicknamed Bubble Gum. But Sophie kept her own attitude toward a later-in-life pregnancy relaxed.

Hawkins also revealed that when she was 31, she froze 15 embryos so she could have the option of having a baby in the future.

“Being 50 is actually an amazing age to have a second child because I am more wise, calm, humorous, appreciative, simple and clear,” defended Sophie against critics. “I’m not running around looking for love and validation. I live each day full of gratitude, and that’s good for my children.”

The mother of two admitted that she did initially feel some concern about Dashiell’s reaction toward having to share her attention. But Hawkins stressed that she viewed jealousy as the only risk in having a baby at 50.

“I’m in great health and Dashiell was a healthy pregnancy, but the risks emotionally seemed huge. Losing the closeness with Dash, our free and adventurous lifestyle, and the risk that he would feel betrayed by my having another child. We’ve come through serious trauma with depth, healing and humor and that has made our bond even stronger.”

Known both for songs such as “Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover” and “As I Lay Me Down,” Sophie also is an actress, with credits including Room 105 and Community. Hawkins blogs frequently, and wrote about her decision to have a second baby, reported People.

Sophie felt that fate propelled her to have her baby girl.

“I knew she would be a girl. When I was in Los Angeles two weeks prior to that day, leaving my son at a friend’s house to have the thawed embryo transferred into my womb, I knew she would come, if I could get out of her way. That was my struggle, not the question, but the surety,” said Hawkins.

“When I made one call from outside the fertility doctor’s office to my sister in New York and she said, ‘Go for it,’ I felt the hand of Fate pushing me into the elevator. I wanted to lean back and let the elevator doors bang on Fate, and yet I had created Fate’s opportunity by freezing my embryos 20 years ago and now thawing them. I couldn’t refreeze the embryos if I wanted to. When my doctor strongly advised transferring the only two viable embryos of the remaining 11 they thawed, I still knew just one child was coming out.”

Sophie isn’t alone in having a child later in life. In addition to Hawkins’ baby girl at 50, As the Inquisitr reported, Jeff Goldblum just had a baby boy, and revealed that he’s thrilled to become a dad for the first time at age 62. Little Charlie Ocean was born on July 4.
