Cris Cyborg Answers Miesha Tate’s Question To UFC Fight At A Catchweight Of 140 Pounds

Earlier this year, the MMA community was ecstatic to find out Cristiane Justino – who is simply known as Cris Cyborg – had signed a contract with UFC to compete in their bantamweight division. That was surely a step forward for the ultimate women’s MMA fight today to actually take place: Ronda Rousey vs. Cris Cyborg. It should be noted both Rousey and Cyborg can compete against each other if both parties agree to fight at a catchweight, something Rousey is unwilling to do. However, another UFC women’s bantamweight contender, Miesha Tate, said she wouldn’t mind fighting Cyborg under such conditions.

It seems Cyborg took the words of “Cupcake” seriously. MMA news is now reporting that Cris Cyborg is now eyeing Miesha Tate at a catchweight fight at 140 pounds.

According to ESPN, George Prajin, Cris Cyborg’s manager, made it known that Cyborg’s upcoming fight against Faith Van Duin at Invicta FC 13 will be her last in said promotion before she makes the transition to UFC.

“The UFC is the biggest stage and Cris is the biggest star. They belong together.”

Once she is in UFC, Cris Cyborg will have to work hard to get her weight down to 135 pounds. UFC officials, as well as UFC president Dana White, have made it clear that a Ronda Rousey vs. Cris Cyborg fight will only happen at the max weight for the women’s bantamweight division. Prior to such a fight, George Prajin believes UFC is open to booking Cyborg to a catchweight fight at 140 pounds prior to Rousey. Not only that, Prajin has a potential opponent in mind for Cyborg.

“Miesha Tate said she’d fight Cris at 140 pounds. That’s probably the second-biggest fight in women’s MMA, behind Cris and Ronda Rousey. It’s a step in the right direction. That’s what we would love to see in Cris’ next fight. If not Miesha, let’s see if one of the other girls will meet Cris halfway.”

MMA Weekly followed-up on the initial source stating a catchweight fight is good for Cris Cyborg because it gives her team the opportunity to see how she’ll perform. Throughout Cyborg’s career, she’s always fought at 145 pounds or higher.

Cris Cyborg will meet Faith Van Duin at Invicta FC 13 at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas in Las Vegas, Nevada. The premier event happens tomorrow starting at 8 p.m. (presumably EST) and can only be viewed on the UFC Fight Pass.
