A woman in Columbus, Georgia has adopted a terminally ill dog and is now attempting to make his final days something special. Nicole Elliot is the woman in question, and she adopted Chester after reading about his need for hospice care for his final days.
Chester had had several tumors removed, but the aggressive cancer returned and he was now in need of a place to look after him until the very end. He is also heart worm positive. Nicole adopted Chester from the Animal Ark Rescue in April, planning to take him home and give him the love he needed in his final days.
“I decided it would be an amazing experience to take on. It will be so tough to lose him shortly, so I decided to take the time he has left (which is undetermined, but not guessed to be very long,) and make it as happy as I can.”
Nicole set up a Facebook page, Chester’s Final Journey, and is open to suggestions for perfect doggie bucket list adventures. The Facebook page has grown over its conception and now has 20,000 likes. Nicole regularly posts updates on Chester, having, most recently, taken him to Flatrock Park. According to her post on Facebook, Chester really enjoyed the trip.
“Chester seemed to really like it. When I lowered him into the water he started doing the swimming motions with his legs, so I think he may have been swimming before. He really enjoyed the warm sun, and he kept getting back into the water… So, we finish our day with another check off of Chester’s bucket list!”
However, while everyone knows Chester has only limited time left on this earth, the latest post to his Final Journey page reminded everyone just how fragile life really is.
As well as making Chester’s last days remarkable, Nicole Elliot is also trying to raise awareness for all the other elderly and sick animals out there that need a financial assistance or a loving home to live out their remaining days.
“We have a new fund account set up for Animal Arks Senior hospice program! If you want to help with Chester, and other senior dogs like him please donate through this link. It is very costly for them to take in these animals! They deserve a chance at a great final journey too! Animal Ark will continue to help dogs JUST LIKE CHESTER, but they need our help! Please share, share, share, and donate if you can!!”
You can donate to this amazing cause by visiting the You Caring Animal Ark Rescue page here. Nicole also regularly posts pictures of animals in need of homes to her Chester’s Last Journey Facebook page, so if you are willing to take on one of these wonderful animals, make sure you keep checking her page.
