Wave 5 Amiibo: Dark Pit Is Best Buy Exclusive, Look Out For Palutena

Since the Nintendo Direct revealing Dark Pit and Palutena as the sole figures in the fifth wave of amiibo due for release sometime in July, 2015, all has been rather quiet on the amiibo front regarding details on how to procure these two highly-detailed figures. Best Buy has broken the silence by announcing the Dark Pit amiibo as another member of the retailer’s growing list of exclusives in North America.

The battle for Dark Pit begins on its confirmed release date of July 31, 2015. This time around, though, Best Buy is releasing the exclusive toys-to-life piece in stores only. The official news comes directly from an announcement made on Best Buy’s corporate website.

Unlike the Meta Knight exclusive, Best Buy is not offering pre-orders on Dark Pit. Additionally, the Dark Pit amiibo is being limited for sale to one per customer on a first come, first served basis. To commemorate the occasion (and perhaps appease anyone going home empty handed), Best Buy is also offering some kind of special deal or discount on Nintendo products that day. Gamers who are not on the amiibo hunt but do like to get a good deal might want to save the date. Depending on the offers, it could turn out to be a solid one-day sale.

Those who have nothing but securing Dark Pit on their minds might have a little more to worry about. The announcement made by Best Buy is certainly an appreciated gesture compared to the lack of communication regarding previous amiibo product launches; however, there are a couple details that are still left unclear. Consumers are being advised to head out to their local Best Buy location early, but there is no guarantee each store will receive a minimum number of Dark Pit amiibo on release day. Typically, products made in limited quantities are not sent to every store location. Stores that do get the limited product sometimes hand out tickets to those waiting in line to streamline the checkout process, as well. To find out more about how Dark Pit day will go down at your local Best Buy, it might be a good idea to call or visit ahead of time and speak with a manager in the gaming department.

Amiibo hunters should also keep a keen eye out for Palutena and additional amiibo restocks on July 31. According to the official Nintendo website, the Palutena amiibo is still listed with a July, 2015, release date. Since wave 5 only includes Dark Pit and Palutena it would make sense for both figures to be released on the same day, as has been the case with all other amiibo waves previously. With wave 5 being so much smaller than previous waves, it would also make sense for retailers to get restocked on other hard-to-find amiibo. Siliconera has reported additional rare restocks are anticipated. So far, GameStop has seen a small number of “rare” amiibo return to stores in late June. Although no official date has been announced regarding restocks or the Palutena amiibo, it cannot hurt to keep an eye out if you’re already at the store.

As a recap, here is what to expect on July 31:

  • Limited quantities
  • No pre-orders
  • Limit one Dark Pit per customer
  • First come, first served
  • Special offers on Nintendo products will be available
  • Palutena and other restocked amiibo are not guaranteed

Questions you may want to ask at your local Best Buy:

  • Is my local Best Buy going to receive Dark Pit?
  • Will there be a midnight opening or early store opening at this location?
  • Will numbered tickets be handed out at some point before doors open?
