2015 NBA Summer League: Rookies Justise Winslow, Myles Turner, And Frank Kaminsky Shine In Orlando On Day One

The Orlando Summer League got underway on Independence Day and several rookies shined including a pair of top-10 draft picks, Justise Winslow, and Frank Kaminsky.

As Inquisitr previously reported, Winslow was terrific in his professional debut. The No. 10 draft pick pumped in 15 points, on 4-of-8 shooting, and doled out three assists to go along with two steals as the Miami Heat defeated the Indiana Pacers 92-76.

Winslow, who recorded an incredible plus-28 +/- rating, received high praise from Heat summer league coach Dan Craig for the way he played on both ends of the court.

“He was locked in, and I thought he did a great job communicating with his teammates for a guy coming into his first game.”

Winslow wasn’t the only draft pick to shine in yesterday’s Heat-Pacers game. Second-round pick Josh Richardson tallied 14 points for the Heat in 22 minutes. He was 9-of-9 from the free throw line. Richardson also came up with two steals and blocked two shots.

Myles Turner, the No. 11 pick in this year’s draft, had a monster game for Indiana. Turner scored 20 points, on 8-of-11 shooting, and hauled in eight rebounds while also blocking three shots.

Frank Kaminsky, the No. 9 overall draft pick, also had a tremendous professional debut, though his Charlotte Hornets fell to the Oklahoma City Thunder 76-74. The 7-footer recorded a double-double as he posted 19 points and 12 rebounds with four of them coming on the offensive end. He was 7-of-19 from the field but sank 4-of-his-8 three-point attempts.

Undrafted free agent Aaron Harrison, who will challenge for a roster spot on the Hornets, according to ESPN, had a solid debut while former Kentucky teammate Dakari Johnson struggled a lit bit for the Thunder. Harrison finished with 10 points and five rebounds as well as three steals. Harrison was 4-of-10 from the field but just 1-of-6 from beyond the arc. Johnson, a second round selection, finished with a minus-10 +/- rating as he tallied seven points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Here are details from a few other games.

Orlando White 87, Detroit Pistons 76

Stanley Johnson, the No. 8 pick in this year’s draft, came off the bench for the Pistons and contributed 13 points, four rebounds, three assists along with three blocks in slightly less than 25 minutes. He was 5-of-8 from the field.

The Detroit Free Press reported that Johnson demonstrated why Detroit went with him instead of Winslow in the draft.

“Johnson showed he can finish at the rim. He showed strength, passing ability and defense. But more importantly he showed toughness.”

Johnson went at it with Orlando’s Glen Rice Jr. after Rice hit him in the mouth. The two had to be separated by an official.

“I am not going to let anybody punk me on the court,” Johnson said. “Just because I am 19 years old and I am new to this. I am not going to let anybody disrespect me. I have no tolerance for that kind of stuff.”

Detroit second round selection Darrun Hilliard didn’t have the game that Johnson did. Hilliard had five points as he made just 2-of-10 shots from the field.

Free agents Keith Benson and Keith Appling led the Magic with 19 and 17 points, respectively.

Orlando Blue 75, Los Angeles Clippers 74

Rookie Mario Hezonja, the No. 5 pick in the draft, knocked down a wing three-pointer with 12.9 seconds remaining in overtime to give Orlando the victory. Hezonja finished with 12 points, on 3-of-8 shooting, but it was the Magic’s 2014 draft picks that stole the show.

Aaron Gordon produced a game-high 22 points and hauled in 18 rebounds while Devyn Marble tallied 14 points. Gordon made 8-of-18 shots from the field and 4-of-10 from the free throw line.

Branden Dawson, the No. 56 overall selection, thrived for the Los Angeles Clippers. He finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds off the bench. He was 6-of-13 from the field that included a monster dunk.

Memphis Grizzlies 81, Brooklyn Nets 73

In the last game of the day, the Grizzlies earned the victory as second-year pro Jordan Adams poured in 20 points. Memphis rookie Andrew Harrison had eight points, and Brooklyn first round selection Rondae Hollis-Jefferson recorded had nine points and three rebounds.
