Conor McGregor: ‘I Would Most Certainly Dismantle Floyd Mayweather If The Opportunity Arose’

UFC star Conor McGregor’s task for the next week is to think about and train for his opponent, Chad Mendes, next Saturday night, as next weekend’s UFC 189 will be, without a doubt, the biggest fight of McGregor’s life. But it appears that McGregor isn’t opposed to thinking about another potential opponent, boxing’s pound-for-pound king Floyd “Money” Mayweather.

McGregor, who is arguably the UFC’s most popular personality, has said in the past that he would have no problem fighting Floyd Mayweather if he ever got the opportunity, and when he was asked about it during his appearance on Conan, he once again said that he would have no problem fighting, and dismantling, Floyd Mayweather, just like he’s going to dismantle Chad Mendes next Saturday night.

Of course, a fight between McGregor and Mayweather is extremely unlikely, even if McGregor is willing to do it. It’s even more unlikely that Mayweather would ever step into the octagon and fight McGregor in the UFC, which is something that McGregor is well-aware of.

“I certainly know he would not want to step into my world, the world of pure unarmed combat where there is no limitations, but I would most certainly step into his world. I would certainly box him if the opportunity arose. Most certainly.”

McGregor also points out that there’s no real opponent left for Mayweather. Of course, there’s guys like Amir Khan and Keith Thurman, one of which may end up fighting Mayweather in September, which may end up being the final fight of Floyd’s career. But McGregor says that there’s no one out there that could generate interest with Mayweather. Well, except for himself.

“There’s no real fight in boxing left for Floyd [Mayweather] anyway. After the Manny [Pacquiao] fight happened, there’s no more real buzz. If you’re looking for a fight that could generate interest, it must be across a match of different styles. I’ve said it before. I don’t feel boxing is the style of fighting that could beat Floyd. But saying that, there are many, many forms of fighting that can beat him. So, if we were to get it on, I would most certainly dismantle him also.”

When McGregor talked about Mayweather in the past, Mayweather has responded by calling the UFC’s Irish superstar “an idiot who’s just trying to get his name out there,” which is possible. But it’s also likely that McGregor believes exactly what he’s saying about taking on, and dismantling, boxing’s pound-for-pound king.
