Young British actor Tom Holland was announced as the new Spider-Man, and he will take the franchise into the 21st Century for Marvel, but who is this 19-year-old?
If you didn’t know him before, you sure will in the coming years, as Marvel has cast him in the titular role for its Spider-Man franchise. The studio looked at several young actors in recent weeks before coming to a decision, but in the end, the coveted role went to Tom Holland.
On Tuesday, Marvel announced, in a statement, they had finally found their man so they can get on with the business of making the next Spider-Man films.
“Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios are proud to announce that after a full worldwide casting search, Tom Holland will play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the next Spider-Man film, in theaters in IMAX and 3D on July 28, 2017. The film will be directed by Jon Watts, director of Cop Car, the upcoming thriller that made its debut earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival.”
But many people are asking who is this fresh-faced kid who will bring to life one of the most popular superheroes of all time?
Despite his looks, Tom Holland has gained a lot of experience since he started his movie career in 2010, as well as his theater career. Today’s announcement indicates the studio was impressed by Holland’s previous roles, including those in The Impossible, Wolf Hall, and the upcoming Ron Howard adventure, In The Heart of The Sea.
Holland also starred in the stage production of Billy Elliot, the Musical (2008-2010), in which he displayed his singing abilities. Additionally, Tom recently completed production of the medieval drama, Pilgrimage, about a group of monks who begin a pilgrimage to transport their monastery’s holiest relic to Rome. Here he plays a young monk, The Novice, opposite Richard Armitage (The Hobbit, Hannibal) and Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead).
Holland and his co-stars shared several photos of the production, while on location, on Twitter and Instagram.
Before Holland makes his debut in the stand-alone, yet-to-be-named Spider-Man film to open in 2017, his character will be featured in the sequel, Captain America: Civil War — set to be released May 6, 2016 — where he will join many of the other Marvel superheroes for the first time.
