Wisler, a Bryan, Ohio, native, is considered one of the game’s top 100 prospects by the respected Baseball America publication, and was drafted in the seventh round out of Bryan High School in 2011 by the San Diego Padres. Bryan turned down a scholarship from Ohio State University to begin his pro career in the San Diego organization.
He rose steadily through the minor league ranks, reaching the Padres’ AAA affiliate, the El Paso Chihuahuas, last year.
But on the eve of opening day this year, the Padres made a major trade, sending Wisler along with three others to the Atlanta Braves for Craig Kimbrel and Melvin Upton, Jr.
At the Braves’ top minor league team, the Gwinnett Braves of the International League, Wisler has struggled somewhat through his first 12 starts, compiling a 3-4 record with an unremarkable 4.29 ERA. But Wisler has fanned 49 in 65 innings with just 13 walks, a ratio of 3.77/1, the stat that likely earned him his promotion to the big club.
But Friday will also be a special day for Mets starter Jacob deGrom. He’ll celebrate his 27th birthday on the day of his 14th start of the season, and the 36th start of his so-far highly successful Major League career.
Last year’s National League Rookie of the Year has followed up his stellar debut season with an even better turn in his sophomore campaign, at least so far. In 85 innings over 13 starts, deGrom has compiled a 7-4 record with a sparkling 2.33 ERA — striking out 90 against a mere 17 walks, and compiling a Walks plus Hits per Inning Pitched (WHIP) ratio of less than one per inning at 0.988.
