Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen turned 29 on Saturday, and they chose to celebrate the big day with an Olympic-themed party in the Hamptons, complete with competing teams with colored shirts (“Team Mary Kate” and “Team Ashley”), E! Online is reporting.
Using the hashtag #OlsenOlympics, invitees to the twins’ celebration shared photos of the events — which included an obstacle course, a dunk tank, and fireworks — on social media.
Although neither Mary Kate nor Ashley stated specifically who won, from social media posts, it looks like Team Ashley won the day: one friend — Jason Seligman — captioned a couple of pics of the celebration with the following messages.
“Champions #TeamAshley #OlsenOlympics #Twinning #SorryMK.”
“Happy Birthday my beautiful MK. You will always be a winner in my book…Except today. #OlsenOlympics #WereNumber1.”
Another attendee at the party made sure that everyone knew that the Olsen twins kept things fair.
“I swear no one chose favorites, they were picked out of a hat #fairgame #olsenolympics”
One person who appears to have been notably absent from the Olsen twins’ celebration, according to People, is Mary Kate’s 46-year-old beau, Olivier Sarkozy. The couple’s relationship has been the subject of media speculation ever since they were first linked together — appearing in public wearing rings that they swore weren’t engagement rings, possibly getting secretly married.
Since becoming household names in the 1990s, when they played the role of Michelle Tanner on Full House, and then parlayed their popularity into a series of direct-to-DVD movies, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen have grown up into adult women and have taken on adult jobs, according to Biography. Both women attended New York University, and then went into parallel careers in fashion. In 2005, Mary Kate and Ashley started a high-end fashion line called The Row — they would later expand their fashion empire to include another line, called Elizabeth and James, after their brother and sister. By 2007, the Olsen twins were the 11th-richest women in entertainment.
While Ashley Olsen has been able to avoid the public eye (as much as possible, anyway), Mary Kate Olsen hasn’t been so lucky. In 2004, she very publicly dealt with an eating disorder at the age of 18, checking herself into a rehab facility for anorexia. She is also rumored to have been one of the first people notified of pal Heath Ledger’s death — something she refuses to discuss to this day.
Mary Kate and Ashley have also announced, to fans’ disappointment, that they won’t be appearing in the upcoming Full House reboot, Fuller House.
