‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 12 Premiere Date Announced: ‘Thank God It’s Thursday’ Is Back, But Still Lots Of Speculation

Grey’s Anatomy season 12 first episode date was announced today, and “Thank God it’s Thursday!” is back. Make sure your comfy couch is ready, drinks are stocked, and pizza’s on the way next September 24. All three of the Thursday ABC hits will return, with Shonda Rhimes’ one-two-three punch of Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, and How to Get Away with Murder.

TVLine says of the Grey’s Anatomy season 12 #TGIT return, “Save this date as if your life depended on it.” Grey’s will air at 8 p.m. followed by Scandal at 9 p.m. and How to Get Away With Murder at 10 p.m. for a full evening of scandal and eye candy to help anyone get away from it all.

The Grey Sloan Memorial hospital crew and fans alike have a lot of emotional situations to resolve when season 12 gets started. April (Sarah Drew) will have to decide whether her desire to re-join the army is more important than her relationship with Jackson (Jesse Williams). Jackson told April that if she goes back to her soldier life, he wouldn’t be there for her when she returns. That sounds serious, but Sarah Drew said there’s still some “room to figure out what’s going to happen” in season 12.

“We haven’t actually broken up. We’re left on the precipice.”

Then there’s the eye candy factor. With fans still reeling from Derek Shepard’s death at the end of season 11 (and the end of Patrick Dempsey’s run with the show), the new season will have to offer a new McDreamy to take Dempsey’s place.

Jason George, who plays Ben Warren, might fill that gap. George has been promoted to a series regular, and will have lots more screen time and story lines focused on Ben and his wife, Bailey.

Derek’s death has left his wife Meredith alone for the first time since Grey’s first aired. There is a lot of speculation about Meredith’s role in season 12. Some are wondering whether the new cast member that Shonda Rhimes is searching for could be a love interest for Meredith as well as the much needed eye candy for fans.

According to International Business Times, it’s more likely that the focus on Meredith will be on her struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. In fact, her illness may set the stage for her final exit from the show, and season 12 could be the end of Meredith’s time on Grey’s Anatomy.

It will be a long wait until September 24, the next Grey’s Anatomy episode, and season 12.
