New York Prison Escapees Now In Vermont?

Two escapees from a New York prison last weekend may be on their way to Vermont. Richard Matt, 48, and David Sweat, 34, were each serving sentences for murder. Both hail from the state of New York, but information has been uncovered that lead police to believe they are heading toward Vermont.

Authorities in Vermont and New York are working to secure the border between the two states in case this new information proves to be true. Though law enforcement officers have been searching tirelessly for the escapees, they have not yet been located. It is not known whether the escapees are still in the state or if they have, indeed, fled to Vermont, New York State Police Superintendent Joseph D’Amico stated.

“We don’t know that they’ve left the state or left the area.”

According to the Burlington Free Press, Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin held a press conference at the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, where the escapees were serving their time.

“This is no time to panic. It’s a time to be sensible. If you see suspicious people, don’t go near them, call law enforcement.

We have information that suggests that they thought New York was going to be hot, and Vermont would be cooler in terms of law enforcement, and a camp in Vermont might be a better place to be.”

Vermont State Police have targeted campgrounds in their search for the escapees, passing out information to campers. Though New York has offered a $100,000 dollar reward for information leading to the arrest of both men, Vermont police caution citizens to stay away from the escapees, as they are known to be dangerous.

The governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, is working with the state of Vermont to apprehend the escapees if, indeed, they have fled across the border. According to CNN, state troopers will also be allowed to cross the border into Vermont if the need arises.

“We have information that would suggest that Vermont was discussed as a possible location. If they are headed toward Vermont…Vermont is engaged and Vermont is mobilized and we are working hand in glove, and we will be coordinating several times a day to make sure every lead we have, every piece of information is shared.”

Police in both states are determined to neutralize the escapees as soon as possible, even if they have crossed into Vermont. Stay tuned for updates.
