‘Degrassi’ Saved By Netflix Following Cancellation News

Degrassi has been saved by Netflix following the news that the teen drama had been cancelled.

TeenNick announced on Thursday, June 4, that they had made the decision to pull the plug on Degrassi: The Next Generation after 14 seasons, leaving fans concerned that this season would be the last. However, luckily, Netflix has decided to pick up the show.

According to Us Weekly, new episodes of the Canadian soap, which originally starred Drake as Jimmy Brooks, will begin streaming on Netflix in the first part of 2016 with a new subtitle: Next Class. The 20 new episodes will also air on the Family Channel.

โ€œWe are energized and excited to work with Family Channel as we tell stories for the new post-millennial teen cohort known as Generation Z, most of whom werenโ€™t even born when Degrassi returned in 2001,โ€ Degrassi co-creator Linda Schuyler said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly.

Netflix is also excited to add the show to their streaming service.

โ€œWe are so excited to bring Degrassi: Next Class to the world,โ€ Erik Barmack, the Vice President of global content at Netflix, said in a statement. โ€œFor more than three decades, this groundbreaking show has been reaching teens with important stories and starting in 2016 our members around the world will be able to enjoy and discover the newest chapter of this great show.โ€

According to Entertainment Weekly, the following cast members will reprise their roles for Next Class: Amanda Arcuri as Lola Pacini, Reiya Downs as Shay Powers, Ana Golja as Zoe Rivas, Nikki Gould as Grace Cardinal, Ricardo Hoyos as Zig Novak, Ehren Kassam as Jonah Haak, Andre Kim as Winston Chu, Lyle Lettau as Tristan Milligan, Spencer Macpherson as Hunter Hollingsworth, Eric Osborne as Miles Hollingsworth III, Olivia Scriven as Maya Matlin, Sara Waisglass as Frankie Hollingsworth, and Richard Walters as Deon โ€œTinyโ€ Bell.

Degrassi: The Next Generation aired 485 episodes and is currently the longest-running dramatic television series in Canadian history.
