Members of the Westboro Baptist Church were doused with hot coffee outside Beau Biden’s funeral, where members of the extremist church were protesting with their iconic signs.
The anti-gay church had vowed to show up at the funeral for Beau, the son of Vice President Joe Biden and the Delaware State Attorney General.
The response was not kind. Many counter-protesters showed up in an attempt to drown out the Westboro Baptist Church, and one man decided to strike out against the group.
The New York Daily News noted.
“Protesters from the notorious Westboro Baptist Church were doused with hot coffee Saturday while they picketed the funeral of Beau Biden in Delaware, they said.”
“An unidentified man was arrested for throwing his cup of joe at demonstrators who were packing up after they sang anti-gay songs and held up hateful signs for about an hour ahead of Vice President Joe Biden’s son’s sendoff, the Delaware News Journal reported.”
The group had announced its plans to picket, taking on Beau Biden and calling out the state of Delaware for what church members said was bad treatment in the past.
“As for Beau Biden, his life was cut short by the will of God to whom all glory is given and he has an eternity of answering to the Lord for his own words, thoughts, actions and sins,” the protest announcement said.
The group also called out Joe Biden.
“Lord willing, WBC will zealously warn Joe Biden and the others at that time/place that God has clear standards, that He requires obedience, and that He curses those who refuse to obey, especially those who interfere with His people in their worship of and service to Him,” the website said. “Our faithful warning: Repent or likewise perish!”
Beau Biden died last week after a battle with brain cancer.
Members of the church showed up after 9 a.m. on Saturday to protest, but they were vastly outnumbered by counter protesters. More than 100 people showed up to drown out the the church and obscure the signs with crude anti-gay messages.

In the lead-up to Beau Biden’s funeral, many questioned whether Westboro Baptist Church members would actually show up. The group has become notorious for threatening to picket after tragic events — including the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School — but then failing to follow through. In the end only three members showed up.
