The Fray Butcher The National Anthem [Video]
The Fray didn’t screw up the lyrics. They didn’t sing off pitch. But they did give one of the worst renditions of the National Anthem in recent memory.
The Fray were tasked with singing the centuries-old song at the NCAA Championship Game last night. And for some reason, they tried to popify the song into some sort of hipster hymn.
And the ridiculous rendition didn’t go unnoticed. Immediately after The Fray finished up their modern rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner,” Twitter users ripped into the band for ruining a national past time.
Patton Oswald wrote:
“Al Qaeda just claimed responsibility for The Fray’s performance of The National Anthem last night.”
Mark Campbell added:
“American patriotism down 22% since The Fray performed the Star-Spangled Banner”
But the band didn’t seem to mind the criticism. The band tweeted after the performance:
“Upon thinking about it, doing the National Anthem is a bit like choosing between Jif and Skippy. You just can’t please everyone.”
Here’s a video of The Fray playing “The Star Spangled Banner.”
