Maroon 5: Why Did Universal Pull Their Video From YouTube?

It seems Maroon 5’s latest video for “This Summer’s Gonna Hurt Like a Motherf****r” has been pulled from YouTube, according to Billboard. Universal Music pulled the video and replaced it with a message from them. The Vevo video for the Maroon 5 song, however, is still up and running. The song itself has caused controversy for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the language — as the title indicates — is explicit. Once you get past the title of the Maroon 5 song, you are then confronted by a bare backside — belonging to none other than Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine.

Why did Universal Music pull the song? Is it possible Adam Levine’s bare backside is to blame? Perhaps the explicit language used throughout the Maroon 5 song is the problem? Or maybe Adam Levine’s recent stance on censorship in the music industry came back to haunt him?

Actually, the real reason is not nearly as interesting as bad language or nudity. Billboard has reported the Maroon 5 video has been pulled from YouTube merely because the video wasn’t correctly overlaid.

“It has to do with Vevo, the music video platform co-owned by UMG and Sony Music. The company serves as the first-stop destination for both majors’ music videos, drawing 41.5 million viewers monthly (as of last November). Vevo appearances on YouTube function by overlaying the traditional player with Vevo’s own. Why? So stakeholders can make more money. Vevo pulls much better ad rates than YouTube because of its popularity (artists’ channels make strong appearances throughout YouTube’s top most-subscribed channels http://vidstatsx.com/youtube-top-100-most-subscribed-channels) and cultural focus.”

As a result of the Maroon 5 song being incorrectly overlaid, a source told Billboard that UMG’s automatic content filter picked up the video, and it was pulled from YouTube as a result. Once the error has been corrected, Maroon 5’s “This Summer’s Gonna Hurt Like a Motherf****r” will be uploaded back to YouTube and the 1.4 million people who viewed the video before it was removed can go back to enjoying Maroon 5 — and Adam Levine’s butt — in all their glory.

Adam Levine has had a bad streak of luck recently when his vocal chords were too sore and he had to cancel the Maroon 5 concert in Liverpool.
