‘Scream’ Mask Revealed For MTV Series

Wes Craven’s iconic horror movie franchise from the 90s, Scream, makes the jump from the movie screen to the TV screen. One of the biggest questions about the MTV version was how are they going to modify the Ghostface mask? An exclusive reveal at EW answered that question.

Creator Jill Blotevogel talks about the new look of Ghostface.

“It evokes some of the Jason hockey mask and the white Michael Myers mask, but it’s still first and foremost evocative of the Scream mask. It’s sort of a reinvention while also paying homage.”

Jaime Paglia, co-writer, talks about changing the mask in order to not mislead the audience.

“The [original] mask is so iconic. If you were to have that mask in a television series, but you weren’t following any of the characters [from the original], I believe that would be misleading the audience.”

Revealing of the mask could not happen without hearing what Wes Craven’s thoughts are.

“The new mask is cool and scary and takes the series into a new direction. It also ties into the story, which I won’t give away.”

Fans on Twitter did not seem too impressed with the new mask.

The MTV series will take place in the small town of Lakewood. A viral YouTube video sets off a chain of events leading to a murder. The murder stirs up emotions and demons from the town’s past.

The Scream movie franchise was famous for having the characters make fun of the horror genre. Certain rules must be followed in order to survive a horror movie. In the movie, the characters threw the rules out the window once they realized they were being hunted by a psychotic killer. These rules have been tweaked for the MTV version.

The MTV adaptation of Scream has been in production since June of 2012. Three years later, the show will debut on June 30, 2015. Season 1 will consist of 10 episodes.

With the horror genre having success on the small screen with American Horror Story and The Walking Dead, MTV is looking to carve out a piece of this niche market for themselves.

Are you looking forward to Scream?
