Last year’s UEFA Champions League Final in Lisbon, Portugal, in which Spain’s Real Madrid defeated its crosstown rival Atletico Madrid, drew an average TV audience of 165 million viewers — and an estimated 380 million viewers overall.
Compare that to an average of 114.4 million for this year’s Super Bowl between the victorious New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks — the most-watched TV broadcast in United States history — and you get an idea of just how popular the Champions League Final actually is.
In fact, that one soccer game drew more viewers on average than the Super Bowl, World Series Game 7 and NBA Finals deciding Game 5 combined.
With two of the world’s best and most glamorous teams going at it on Saturday, the 2015 UEFA Champions League Final will likely draw an even larger TV audience than last year’s edition.
The game also features the world’s best player, Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, who put the ball in the back of the net an incredible 58 times in 56 games as he led the Catalan powerhouse to the La Liga title, and with a win on Saturday, the Champions League trophy as well.
Barcelona also won Spain’s domestic cup competition, the Copa del Rey, for the 27th time this year, meaning a Champions League title gives the club a rare treble.
Barcelona has already won the UEFA Champions League three times, plus a win in the 1991-1992 European Cup, the last year before the tournament was revamped as the Champions League.
Juventus, on the other hand, has won the Champions League just once, in 1994-1995, plus one earlier European Cup trophy.
