USWNT’s Alex Morgan’s Goal? To Be 100 Percent Healthy For The World Cup Next Month

U.S. National Women’s Team starting forward Alex Morgan says it’s her goal to be 100 percent healthy for the Women’s World Cup in June after suffering a bone bruise to her knee last month. Morgan missed two friendly exhibition games against Ireland and Mexico as a precautionary measure in order to give her knee time to rest and heal.

Alex Morgan burst onto the international soccer scene after scoring some integral goals for the U.S. in the 2011 Women’s World Cup. Known for her speed and agility, Morgan excels at outwitting goalkeepers in one-on-one breakaways. Though the USWNT has many other go-to gals up top, such as veteran player Abby Wambach and the excitable Syndey Leroux, Alex Morgan’s pinpoint precision and ability to finish may just be the edge the USWNT needs to pull out the victory this Cup.

Morgan addressed the media yesterday stating, “I’m still day-to-day. But there is no question in my mind that my knee will not be bothering me. I’ll be 100 percent, and I’m looking forward to the World Cup and knowing that won’t set me back at all.”

Morgan, like many of her fellow USWNT players, is looking forward to the opportunity to “settle the score” and take the Cup that just slipped through their feet last time. Alex has been featured prominently in FIFA advertisements promoting the Women’s World Cup on Fox.

Morgan, who plays for the Portland Thorns FC in the National Women’s Soccer League, was a 2012 FIFA Player of the Year nominee. Alex’s past couple of years have been marred by a repetitive ankle injury that has kept Morgan sidelined off and on. Many fans were relieved to hear that Morgan’s knee injury was nothing more serious as she prepares to run on the world stage once again.

Earlier today, EA Sports announced Alex Morgan and a variety of other national team players would be featured for the first time in FIFA 16. Morgan, a stand out fan favorite and prominent face for the USWNT, tweeted her elation at being included:

As she takes the next couple of weeks to continue healing before laying it all on the soccer field at the World Cup, hopefully Alex Morgan is heeding her own words of wisdom that inspired a popular meme for soccer girls everywhere, “Whatever brings you down will eventually make you stronger.”
