Daron Dylon Wint Arrested, Accused Of Slaying Wealthy Washington Family

Daron Dylon Wint has been arrested by police in Washington and accused with killing a wealthy family outside their mansion in Washington, D.C.

Wint was arrested Thursday, one week after the family of three was murdered along with their housekeeper and their mansion set on fire. Police said that Wint worked for American Iron Works, a company owned by 46-year-old Savvas Savopoulos.

Savvas was found dead last week along with his his 47-year-old wife, Amy, and their their son, Philip. Also killed was their housekeeper, Veralicia Figueroa. Police have not released a possible motive for the slayings, but some have suggested that it was a hostage situation gone wrong. While the family was reportedly being held, someone delivered $40,000 to the home and a pizza was delivered.

Details of the slayings were gruesome. Sources close to the investigation told WTTG that the husband, wife, and housekeeper were found tied to chairs and doused with gasoline. Philip Savopoulos was found in his bed and reportedly showed signs of torture.

As The Associated Press noted, there were some strange details to the case:

“Text messages and voicemails from the Savopouloses to their confused and frightened household staff suggest something was amiss in the house many hours before the bodies were found. Their blue Porsche turned up in suburban Maryland. It too had been set on fire.”

Other sources claimed that Daron Dylon Wint had access to the family’s security system and knew how to bypass it.

The case gained attention in large part because of the family’s wealth. The Savopoulos family lived in a $4.5 million mansion in a neighborhood with high security due to its proximity to Vice President Joe Biden’s official residence.

This is not the first time Daron Dylon Wint has been in trouble with the law. In 2009 he was convicted of second-degree assault in Maryland and sentenced to 30 days in jail. The following year he pleaded guilty to malicious destruction of property and had another burglary charge that was ultimately dropped.

Police reportedly figured out the suspect’s identity thanks to a discarded piece of pizza crust. Investigators analyzed DNA from the Domino’s pizza crust that had been ordered to the house, finding that it belonged to Wint.

But some close to Wint doubted that he could have pulled off the brutal murders.

“He is a gentle guy. He was a student at Prince George’s Community College. He wouldn’t hurt a fly,” said Attorney Robin Ficker, who represented Wint in the past. “He’s the kind of guy that you wouldn’t mind your grandmother going to lunch with.”

Daron Dylon Wint is now facing four charges of murder.
