Norwegian Dawn: Cruise Ship Loses Power And Runs Aground In Bermuda

Those looking for a fun-filled and relaxing vacation aboard the Norwegian Dawn didn’t get quite what they expected. The Norwegian Cruise Line ship originated out of Boston and had a shaky leg of its sailing, as it temporarily lost power and ended up running aground in Bermuda.

According to ITV, the Norwegian Dawn was departing out of Kings Wharf in Bermuda when it temporarily lost power. The cruise ship, holding 3,737 passengers on board — 2,675 guests and 1,062 crew members — was lucky to escape with no injuries.

“The ship’s propulsion was affected and, at which time, the vessel made contact with the channel bed,” Norwegian Cruise Line said in a statement.

The loss of power was just temporary for the Norwegian Dawn, and spokeswoman Vanessa Picariello said that the ship had it come back. She also said that the team and officials were assessing the situation.

“Norwegian Dawn temporarily lost power as the ship was departing King’s Wharf, Bermuda. The ship’s propulsion was affected and, at which time, the vessel made contact with the channel bed. All guests and crew are safe.”

As the situation carried on, though, passengers began taking to social media to let everyone know what was happening with the ship. Many posted pictures of crew members being lowered into small boats so they could go and inspect the ship.

Tug boats were also sent out to the scene to help in figuring out how serious the situation was.

After a while, Chief Maritime Operations Controller Denis Rowe said that the ship was in stable condition. He also said that even though the Norwegian Dawn ran aground in Bermuda, it suffered no damage at all, and there was no pollution to the water.

According to the Norwegian Cruise Line’s website, the Norwegian Dawn is a full 965 feet long and weighs in at 92 tons. It started out in Boston, and its destination was Bermuda, but it ran into its problems upon departure.

Norwegian Cruise Line just had a number of pieces of bad news on Tuesday, as it was revealed that a 10-year-old girl drowned on the Norwegian Gem this past Sunday.

The Norwegian Dawn did run aground in Bermuda on Tuesday evening, but all seemed alright after crews checked it out and learned there was no damage. It was set to continue its voyage, and that power was fully restored.
