After 14-Year-Old Student Tried To Get Dates From Girls In Class, He Received An Unexpected Call

A 14-year-old boy who was a student at Imagine Charter School in West Melbourne, Florida, wanted to get dates with the girls in his high school science class. So, perhaps half-joking, he wrote his phone number on the blackboard in his science class and told the girls to call him. But when his phone rang, the voice on the other end wasn’t who he was expecting.

The caller wasn’t one of his female classmates — it was his married, 31-year-old teacher, Irene Isabel Khan.

Now, three years later, Khan has pleaded guilty to charges that stemmed from what police say was a months-long sexual relationship with the boy. After initially denying the charges, Khan finally admitted on Wednesday to two counts of lewd or lascivious battery against a child between 12 and 16-years-old.

The charges are second-degree felonies, but she escaped with a light sentence when Brevard County Circuit Court Judge James H. Earp hit her only with 10 years of sex offender probation and two years of community control, which means she is subject to supervision by law enforcement and must adhere to court-prescribed conditions.

Among the conditions — she is not allowed to dress up as Santa Claus. In fact, Khan is not permitted to wear any costumes designed to entertain or amuse children. She must also register as a sex offender for the rest of her life.

Defying the court-ordered conditions could put her in prison for 30 years.

“She got into a sexual relationship with him over several months, and we got information on that, and we brought the victim in and questioned him,” said Steve Wilkinson, a spokesperson for the West Melbourne Police.

When police questioned the boy, he told them that Khan took him to local motel rooms where they engaged in sexual relations. They also had intimate relations in Khan’s car and in her own apartment.

Khan, now 34, was going through a divorce at the time of her sexual relationship with the then-14-year-old high school boy. Her divorce was granted in 2012.

The Imagine School also fired Khan in January of 2012, though according to a report on WESH TV, her dismissal resulted not from the inappropriate relationship, but from other unacceptable behavior such as revealing tattoos on her body to students.

Khan now joins the increasingly lengthy parade of female school teachers accused or convicted of sexual relationships with male, or occasionally female students. Just last month, a 27-year-old teacher at a Christian school in Louisiana was arrested on charges that she had sexual intercourse with a 15-year-old student, to cite one recent example.
