Next ‘Assassin’s Creed’ Will Feature A Playable Female Lead

According to Kotaku, citing unnamed sources, the next Assassin’s Creed game will feature a playable female protagonist.

Kotaku broke the news today, one day ahead of the official Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate reveal, citing a source close to the information. The next Assassin’s Creed will feature two playable characters: Jacob and Evie, who are reportedly siblings. The fact that players will be able to jump into the role of a female assassin isn’t anything new, as Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China recently had a female lead, but it does mark a departure from Ubisoft’s stance just one year ago when the developer claimed there was too much involved to animate female characters.

Speaking at E3 2014, a Ubisoft technical director told VideoGamer that the task of animating a playable female Assassin’s Creed character would “double the work” of the team, and so therefore it was scrapped to save time and resources.

According to the report, one will spend the majority of their time in missions as Jacob, but while exploring the world, you can freely switch between the siblings in Assassin’s Creed. Also in the report was the reveal that there is no multiplayer mode, which should help the Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate team to fine-tune the single player experience.

Recent Assassin’s Creed games have had a bumpy release, with Assassin’s Creed: Unity debuting pretty much broken for most players. Assassin’s Creed: Rogue also released and was relatively well-received, though it didn’t do much to wash the taste of Unity from player’s mouths.

Ubisoft will officially unveil Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate tomorrow, May 12. You can RSVP on their website if you’d like to be kept up-to-date when the reveal happens. Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate will reportedly be set in Victorian London with players controlling the two aforementioned assassin’s as part of a large criminal organization. While no story details or how this ties into the previous games have been revealed as of yet, it’s safe to say there will be some real-world tie in.

It should never have taken this long for one of the major Assassin’s Creed releases to feature a strong, playable, female character. While many might point to Elise from Unity, remember that you couldn’t play as her in the game. There have been strong female characters before, but Ubisoft finally getting the hint and allowing some gender diversity is a great move for players.

Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate’s reveal will take play at 17:00 U.K. time, 12 p.m. EST / 9 a.m. PST tomorrow morning.
