Jar Jar Binks Exonerated: ‘Star Wars’ Quotes Mashup Reveals How Bad Prequels Really Were

Jar Jar Binks has been exonerated.

That’s the message from a new mashup video that Slate released to prove once and for all that yes, the Star Wars prequels really were as bad as you thought they were.

In the video (embedded below), which runs only one minute and 50 seconds in length, the editors have taken every cringeworthy piece of dialogue — most of it belonging to Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christiansen) — and they’ve strung it all together for one face-palming moment of dishonor.

George Lucas was heavily derided for creating the annoying alien character of Jar Jar Binks almost immediately after the release of Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

The character was so hated that his role was greatly reduced in Episode II: Attack of the Clones and even more so in Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.

The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams even heaped coals on poor Jar Jar Binks with a tease that, according to Polygon, he’d considered putting Jar Jar’s bones in the background of the new film, which releases in December.

But if you watch this video, you will see that Mr. Binks only has one line in the entire video, and after hearing the other lines, I can understand why. They are much, much worse than anything the Gungan ever said.

But don’t take my word for it. Have a look for yourself.

Ouch.

Of course, all blame for what you just witnessed shouldn’t go to the actors or the characters attached to them. That’s because all stemmed from the mind of George Lucas.

Lucas sold the Star Wars property to Disney for $4.26 billion and has since recovered some goodwill that he had lost in the immediate aftermath of Episode III‘s release.

By handing the franchise over to Disney and even going as far as convincing Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher to go back to the franchise for long-awaited sequels, it’s likely that Mr. Lucas has repaired some of the damage he caused with characters like Jar Jar and lines like the ones you just heard.

As for my “favorites” from the video, I think the Anakin lines about sand being coarse and his reasoning that Padme is so beautiful because he’s so in love with her (or something) take the cake.

Honorable mention, of course, would go to the “from my point of view, the Jedi are evil” line, he muttered during the lava fight with Obi-Wan.

What do you think, readers? Does the above video make you hate Jar Jar Binks a little less?
