Hugh Jackman Retires As Wolverine: Jackman Makes X-Men Exit Announcement Official

Hugh Jackman is officially done being Wolverine. Once Jackman finishes filming Wolverine 3, he is exiting the franchise for good. Though he had hinted at this very announcement before, he put the official stamp on it Thursday (May 7), when he appeared on an episode of The Dr. Oz Show. Yahoo! Movies writer Meriah Doty relayed what the Australian actor had to say about his future and Wolverine 3.

This will be my last one. It just felt like it was the right time to do it. And let’s be honest, 17 years. I never thought in a million years it would last, so I’m so grateful to the fans for the opportunity of playing it. I kind of have in my head what we’re going to do in this last one. It just feels like this is the perfect way to go out.

As previously reported on the Inquisitr, Jackman teased on Instagram how Wolverine 3 might be his final moment as the character. It created a lot of buzz about the topic, but he never officially addressed what might take place. It lead to rumors about whether the Wolverine character might die, allowing Jackson to easily walk away from the franchise. Now it simply appears that he may have found a story that ends his run in a way with which he can be pleased.

Very little information about Wolverine 3 has been released to this point, other than some of the main players. James Mangold will direct, Michael Green is the lead writer, and Stan Lee serves as the executive producer. Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart (as Charles Xavier) are the only two cast members that have been confirmed. It has a release date of March 3, 2017, meaning it will come out after the next X-Men movie.

X-Men: Apocalypse is set to be released on May 27, 2016, and is currently under production. Director Bryan Singer has released a number of set images online, helping put faces to not only new characters, but younger versions of familiar characters that audiences have seen in the past. Some of the confirmed cast members for this new X-Men film are Channing Tatum as Gambit, James McAvoy as Charles Xavier, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Oliva Munn as Psylocke, and Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggert.

It has not been revealed whether X-Men: Apocalypse will have any scenes with Wolverine or Hugh Jackman, but he has long been rumored as an actor attached to the film. Comic book fans likely have a good idea where this X-Men film is going with its plot, but that has also been kept under wraps by Bryan Singer.
