Seattle Seahawks Rumors: Bruce Irvin Addresses Seahawks Not Picking Up Option

Seattle Seahawks rumors about Bruce Irvin just keeping coming. The Seahawks and Irving looked to be parting ways as the 2015 NFL Draft approached, with the team rumored to have been shopping the linebacker. As reported by NWCN on Monday morning (May 4), this stemmed from a previous story where the Seahawks didn’t plan on picking up his option for the 2016 NFL season. Never one to watch what he says on social media, Irvin posted a series of comments on Twitter about how he felt. Many of them were filled by expletives weeded out by NWCN.

“Worked for everything I got in my life this (expletive) will b no different! I earns my keeps!”

“Faced way tougher adversity getting outta them streets coming up! That’s (expletive) is nothing! (Expletive) THAT OPTION!I am a Seahawk! #12thman”

“Im a very blunt person and that won’t ever change sorry if u dislike it”

It might appear like Irvin is prepared to enter Seattle Seahawks training camp with a bit of a chip on his shoulder this summer. Selected in the first-round of the 2012 NFL Draft, he has had a big impact on the team and how it plays defense. In the 2014 NFL season, he had six-and-a-half sacks during the regular season and also had two defensive touchdowns. In his first three years with the Seahawks, Irving has sixteen-and-a-half sacks total and has been a great edge rusher for the team.

The contract option that it appears the Seahawks will pass on was set to give Irvin $7.75 million in the 2016 NFL season. If they don’t reach an extension with him, Irvin will become a free agent following the next Super Bowl. He could be an interesting free agent for another team to pick up, but they will have to also take the good with the bad. Some of that bad came out in the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots. As previously reported on the Inquisitr, he was at the center of an on-field fight that ended the game in an ugly fashion.

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll has expectedly weighed in on the Bruce Irvin situation as well. Carroll spoke about his hopes moving forward, specifically how the contract situation with Irvin should be considered fluid at this point.

“We discussed what our plan is and what we are planning on doing, still knowing that maybe something could happen that could change the decision. It has nothing to do with the statement of how we feel about him in our program. We expect him to be here for a long time and we will work to get that done.”

Even if it turns out that the Seattle Seahawks want to bring Bruce Irvin back for more seasons, the reality comes down to the team not being able to afford contract extensions for everyone. With a new deal pending for quarterback Russell Wilson, Irvin might just be one of the casualties that the Seahawks will have to move on without.
